Community rallies after devastating Willsboro fire

WILLSBORO | The Willsboro and surrounding communities quickly rallied to help a local family who lost everything in a devastating fire in the height of the weekend's arctic blast. As bitterly cold temperatures dropped well below zero late Saturday afternoon, volunteer fire departments from across Essex and Clinton counties were called to Sunset Drive, where flames tore through Todd and Charlotte Gerding's large two-story home and attached garage. The fire quickly consumed the residence in what area firefighters later called the worst conditions imaginable. It was a several-hour battle into the night as firefighters fought against water supply challenges, freezing trucks, ice-covered grounds and sub zero temperatures. Despite the many challenges, the overwhelming coordinated response eventually quelled the flames as concerned residents came together not only for the Gerding family but first responders. Neighbors fanned out in search of the family's missing pets as Village Meat Markets and Khushi Mart helped supply food and beverages at the fire and nearby firehouse and Willsboro Diner opened its doors to firefighters for hot coffee and a place to warm up. On Sunday, the Willsboro Fire Department and Willsboro/Reber Fire Department Auxiliary expressed deep gratitude to every department and volunteer who raced to their aid. "To the firefighters who worked tirelessly in brutal temperatures, thank you for your courage, your endurance, and your unwavering commitment to protecting our community. Your teamwork and determination in such dangerous conditions did not go unnoticed," officials said. "To the volunteers who stepped in to keep everyone warm, fed, and supported throughout the night, your kindness made an enormous difference. In moments like these, the strength of our community truly shines through. Our hearts are with the family who lost their home. As they begin to navigate the difficult days ahead, we hope they feel the support and compassion of this entire community behind them." Members of the Gerding family also took to social media to thank first responders who worked tirelessly through the night. The Gerdings and their son, Tyler, were able to narrowly escape the blaze but lost everything in the fire. They found a temporary place to stay as they navigate the difficult first few days and long road ahead. A GoFundMe was launched and raised more than $24,000 in just 24 hours as neighbors and residents collected winter gear, clothing and shoes. Willsboro Diner is hosting a take-out chicken and biscuit dinner fundraiser this Friday, Jan. 30 for the Gerding family. Owner Drew Reithel said the menu will be chicken and biscuit, mashed potatoes with gravy, a vegetable and brownie for dessert. Cost is $15 for adults and $10 for kids.
