$12M awarded in NY-21 for housing, economic development projects

WASHINGTON, D.C. | Congresswoman Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.), Chairwoman of House Republican Leadership, has announced $12 million in funding for housing and economic development projects across Upstate New York and the North Country in the federal appropriations bill. "I am proud to deliver $12 million in federal funding for housing and critical economic development projects in our district. From the Lake Champlain-Lake George Regional Planning Board's North Country Housing Initiative to Montgomery County's Business Development Center construction at the old Beech-Nut factory to the Village of Cobleskill's Grandview Drive Project, I have worked to deliver funding for these projects for years. This significant investment will serve as a catalyst for economic growth across Upstate New York for decades to come. Throughout my time in Congress, I have consistently fought to deliver real results and have secured nearly $1 billion in federal funds invested directly into our district," Stefanik said Jan. 22. Among the recipients was the Lake Champlain–Lake George Regional Planning Board's North Country Housing Initiative. It will receive $5,000,000 to increase the stock of workforce housing in Clinton, Essex, Hamilton, Warren, and Washington Counties through community outreach, completion of site-specific pre-development, and the construction and rehabilitation of new and existing units. "The $5 million grant secured by Congresswoman Stefanik for the Lake Champlain–Lake George Regional Planning Board represents a transformative investment in the future of the Adirondacks and North Country," said Executive Director Beth Gilles. "The North Country Housing Initiative confronts the real barriers to workforce housing—outdated zoning, steep pre-development costs, and insufficient funding to build and renovate homes for middle-income, year-round residents. Addressing these challenges together is essential to keeping our communities vibrant and our workforce rooted here year-round." The North Country Chamber of Commerce welcomed the inclusion of several regional priorities in an Appropriations Bill passed by the U.S. House of Representatives and expected to see bipartisan approval by the U.S. Senate. The bill includes 2026 appropriations for Transportation, Labor and Housing among other agencies and purposes and includes several projects and programs which the Chamber has been actively supporting. "Provisions important to the North Country include full, increased funding for the Essential Air Service Program (EAS) which supports passenger air services at several regional airports, including Plattsburgh and Saranac Lake," notes Garry Douglas, Chamber President. "It also, very importantly, provides continued robust investment in public transit, including bus and rail systems nationally. As a region squarely in the transportation equipment business, this means important contract opportunities and job support in the North Country." "Affordable housing and workforce training have also been a priority for our employers and we therefore are pleased with $5.75 million directed to the Lake Champlain-Lake George Regional Planning Board for a major workforce housing initiative. And $350,000 for manufacturing workforce training in our area," Douglas said. "We sought these actions throughout the process, including in meetings we had in Washington last fall, and we thank Congresswoman Elise Stefanik and Senators Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand for their active commitment and delivery.
