Wbg. girls scorch Salem, get whacked by Whitehall

SALEM | Two days after demonstrating their prowess Jan. 14 by dominating Salem 57-40, the Warrensburg Girls Basketball team experienced disappointment over a 43-17 loss to Whitehall. Commenting on the Salem game, Burghers coach Scott Smith said he was pleased with how his players had executed offensive plays. Senior point guard Avah Fiorentino was on fire over the game, not only leading all scorers but also tallying a career-high 26 points, which included a trio of three-point shots. Fiorentino both shot from the perimeter and repeatedly drove to the basket. In addition, she executed several steals on defense that led to fast-break opportunities, Smith said, adding that she also finished with seven assists. Genna Lehocki also played a key role on offense, as she tallied 15 points and six rebounds. "It was definitely one of our better offensive nights this season," he said, adding that Lehocki was "becoming more comfortable inside, making some great post moves." Sophomore Kaylie Powers contributed by grabbing eight rebounds and scoring five points, while junior guard Haley Morse provided six points and four assists. Junior guard Carmyn Fruda sank both a field goal and a free throw, and sophomore forward Celia O'Donnell added two points. For Salem, Makenzie McKernon scored 19 points and Meredith Barrett contributed nine points. With the win, Warrensburg boosted its win-loss record to 8-5 overall and 3-3 in the Adirondack League. WHITEHALL 43, BURGHERS 17 On Jan. 16, Whitehall employed their tough half-court man-to-man defense to dominate Warrensburg 43-17. Coach Smith said that since his team now has a week off from competition, his players will be assessing how to better respond to such aggressive defense. "We will be taking this week to regroup and focus on a few things to improve on," he said. "We'll be working hard in practice, and hopefully that will help us finish the season strong." Next up for the Burghers is a game Wednesday, Jan. 28 against Granville at home, which serves as Warrensburg's "Alumni Night" event. All former Warrensburg girls basketball players are urged to attend, as they will be recognized before the game's tipoff. On Friday, Jan. 30, a home game against North Warren is scheduled: the team's Senior Night when the Warrensburg athletes graduating in June — Fiorentino and forward Caitlin O'Donnell — will be hailed.
