Village of Dannemora responds to arrest of former mayor

DANNEMORA | Following the arrest of former Village of Dannemora Mayor Richard Scholl, the current administration is speaking out to reassure public confidence in village leaders and operations. Scholl, a civilian employee of DOCCS, is accused of allegedly falsifying time sheets to allow state correction officers to claim they worked as village employees to secure more generous benefits from the state retirement system. He was arrested on charges of tampering with public records and falsifying business records in a high-profile case announced by top state officials Jan. 14. Scholl's mayoral term ended in March 2023. On Thursday, current Village of Dannemora Mayor Shaun Akin issued a statement that read in full: "The arrangement of Former Mayor Scholl is deeply concerning, and I understand the impact they may have on our community's trust in local government. While the legal process will determine the outcome, I want to assure every resident that our administration is fully committed to transparency, accountability, and restoring confidence in Village leadership and employees. Since assuming office in April 2023, we have implemented measures to strengthen oversight and ensure compliance with New York State Comptroller standards. Our focus moving forward is clear: building a culture rooted in integrity, fairness, and service to the people of the Village of Dannemora. I encourage everyone to rely on official updates and remain united in our shared goal of a stronger, more trustworthy local government. Together, we will move past this moment and reaffirm what makes our village proud—honesty, hard work, and community."
