PHS tops Saranac as McLane game raises over $4,100

PLATTSBURGH | Plattsburgh High defeated Saranac 6-3 in CVAC boys hockey as the third annual Aimee McLane Memorial Scholarship Game once again drew strong community support at AC North Arena. The event honoring the former Stafford Middle School teacher raised more than $4,100 through 42 raffle baskets to benefit scholarships for selected seniors at Peru, Plattsburgh High and Saranac. McLane, the mother of former Saranac goaltender Shawn McLane, died on New Year's Day 2024 after a battle with glioblastoma. On the ice, James Bayer scored twice and Cooper Holland recorded a goal and three assists as the Hornets pulled away with three goals in the third period. The game was played Tuesday, Jan. 13. Saranac opened the scoring when Adrian Barnes found the net with 3:55 remaining in the first period, assisted by Brody Macomber and Robbie Squier. Plattsburgh High tied it early in the second on Ryan Brown's goal at 15:21, then took the lead on Ben Bezio's tally at the 9:21 mark. Deacon Giroux tied the game at 2-2 with 3:34 left in the period before Bayer scored with 1:28 remaining to send the Hornets into the third period up 3-2. Bayer struck again with 11:18 remaining in the third to make it 4-2. Saranac cut the deficit to one when Gabe Moore scored unassisted at 8:50, but Sam Bezio and Holland added unassisted goals at 4:36 and 0:54 to seal the outcome. Owen Chapple made 24 saves on 27 shots for Plattsburgh High, and Carson Holland stopped 22 of 27 for Saranac. Saranac head coach Robby Knowles said the game turned on second-period play and puck management. "I thought our pace was good in the first and third periods," Knowles said. "We got caught running around in our defensive zone in the second period and that led to better chances for PHS. We had four or five odd man rushes that we did not cash in on, and Chapple came up with some big saves on those opportunities. Ultimately, our puck management cost us. Credit to PHS for being opportunistic on our mistakes in the third period." Knowles also thanked the many supporters of the Aimee McLane Memorial Scholarship Game, noting the continued turnout reflected the impact McLane had on her students, co-workers and the community.
