Assemblyman Cashman appointed to Committee on Aging

ALBANY | Assemblyman Michael S. Cashman (D–115th District) has been appointed to serve on the New York State Assembly Committee on Aging, a key legislative body responsible for advancing policies that support older New Yorkers, protect seniors' rights, and strengthen the systems that allow individuals to age with dignity and independence. The appointment reflects both Assemblyman Cashman's lifelong commitment to public service and the realities of the 115th Assembly District, which encompasses rural communities across Clinton, Franklin, and Essex counties. The region has a notably older population than the state as a whole with more than 20 percent of residents in Clinton and Franklin Counties and nearly 26 percent in Essex County aged 65 or older, highlighting the urgent need for policies that support seniors in rural areas. "For me, this work is deeply personal," said Assemblyman Cashman. "I was fortunate to grow up in a multi-generational household, with my maternal grandparents living downstairs. My grandmother's strength and independence continue to inspire my work." The Assembly Committee on Aging oversees legislation related to senior services, long-term care, home- and community-based supports, aging-in-place initiatives, and protections against abuse and neglect. Assemblyman Cashman's appointment ensures that the voices of rural communities often underrepresented in statewide policy discussions, are heard in Albany. Cashman continued. "If we want seniors to age in place with dignity and respect, we must address the real costs they face housing, energy, healthcare, transportation, and property taxes. Aging in place should not be a privilege it should be a realistic option for every New Yorker." "One thing we all share, God willing, is that we will age," Cashman added. "I will fight for policies that respect dignity, independence, and quality of life for older New Yorkers, especially in rural communities like ours. We owe it to the generations that came before us, and to those who will follow." Since his election, Assemblyman Cashman has hit the ground running. In his first 48 days, he held more than 70 stakeholder meetings, community events, and site visits, assisted 22 constituents with casework, opened both his District Office as well as Albany office and introduced his first two pieces of legislation demonstrating his commitment to tangible results from day one. In 2026 he has already held two Town Halls never relenting directly from hearing from the people he was elected to serve.
