Ti mill partnership considers waste-to-energy sustainability hub

TICONDEROGA | Sylvamo is partnering with Bright Sand Industries Inc., which develops systems that convert waste to products and energy, to create an integrated sustainability hub, including a soil booster plant, vertical greenhouse, packaging facility, solar farm and research facility at its Ticonderoga mill. The companies signed a letter of intent for Bright Sand to study the feasibility of building a plant to convert renewable residuals from the paper manufacturing process into certified U.S. Department of Agriculture BioPreferred soil boosters to improve soil structure, drainage and water retention. Under the agreement, Sylvamo would become a long-term supplier to Bright Sand, which would invest an estimated $190 million to build the sustainability hub on approximately 50 acres of mill property leased from Sylvamo. The process would keep most of the renewable residuals generated by the Ticonderoga mill out of its landfill, negating the need for future landfill expansion and reducing greenhouse gas emissions from disposing of the material by 2,000 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent annually, the same impact as taking more than 400 gasoline-powered cars off the road for one year. "We know the future of paper deserves a company committed to the success of the entire ecosystem. This project shows how circular solutions can reduce waste, lower emissions, save money and create new opportunities in a region we care deeply about," said Chris Dostie, mill manager. Bright Sand also plans to construct a vertical green house that uses excess heat, water and carbon dioxide from its soil booster plant to grow more than 200 tons of produce per year. Plans also include a packaging facility to prepare and ship products, solar farm to support closed-loop sustainability and a potential lab and research facility.
