Peru holds off 10-time Vermont champion in OT

PERU | Reese Duprey scored 31 points and lifted Peru past a 10-time Vermont Division 1 state champion in overtime as the Nighthawks held off Champlain Valley Union for a 63-59 non-conference girls basketball victory Friday, Jan. 2. Duprey forced overtime by finishing a feed from Eliana Trumper with 1.4 seconds left in regulation, tying the game at 52-52 after Peru trailed by two with 6.6 seconds remaining. In the extra period, Duprey opened the scoring with a layup from the right block and sealed the win at the free-throw line as Peru outscored CVU 11-7. Champlain Valley Union, which has won 10 Vermont Division I state titles including two of the last three, was led by Zoey McNabb's team-high 30 points. McNabb hit a 3-pointer with 3.2 seconds left in overtime to cut the deficit to four, but Peru closed out the win. Violet Berry added 16 points for Peru, including two free throws with 30.6 seconds remaining in overtime that pushed the lead to four. Trumper finished with nine points and converted a key offensive rebound midway through overtime, then added two more free throws late. "I am incredibly proud of the performance we put on tonight," Peru head coach Brittany Marshall said. "After a long game hiatus through the holidays, this was a challenging game to start back up with. CVU is extremely talented, and I thought we did a great job forcing them into outside shots late in the shot clock." Duprey also finished with 12 rebounds and four assists, according to Marshall, who credited Peru's execution down the stretch. "Reese Duprey continues to shine at all ends of the court," Marshall said. "She was closely followed by a strong performance by Violet Berry. Bella Berry did a great job as our floor general tonight, making some key passes through their press. I am very proud of our overall execution late in the game to force overtime where we were able to end up finishing with the win." McNabb accounted for six of CVU's nine made 3-pointers. Sarah Skaflestad scored nine points and Deirdre Higgins and Addie Thomas added six apiece for the Redhawks. Bella Berry finished with five points for Peru, while Allison Brubach added two. The Nighthawks made seven free throws in overtime to close out the win.
