Ti High students shop for food pantry

TICONDEROGA | On the morning of Thursday, Dec. 11, 32 students from Ticonderoga Junior/Senior High School arrived at the Walmart Super Center, ready and eager to shop for the Ticonderoga Food Pantry. Breaking into ten teams of shoppers, each team was given the same amount of money to spend for food and other household necessities. They were charged with keeping track of their time and money – in other words, budgeting. The team that came the closest to the pre-set limit without going over was declared the winner. The trip was organized by Jay Wells, Government and Economics teacher at Ti High. The group of students got involved in community civics and philanthropy and learned an important lesson in economics, too. At the same time, they had fun doing it. After the shopping was done, everything they bought was loaded onto a school bus, driven over to the Food Pantry, and unloaded/delivered for the volunteers of the Food Pantry. "I truly do not know how they shopped for that much in just 30 minutes," remarked Margaret Beuerlein, Food Pantry Director. "Watching the students unload that bus brought one of our volunteers to tears- happy tears, for sure." Ticonderoga Montcalm Street Partnership (TMSP), a non-profit organization working to enhance Ticonderoga, provided the funding for this adventure in learning thanks to a grant from the Stewart's Holiday Match program.
