Ribbon cut on new Ti police station

TICONDEROGA | Not a parking spot was to be had at 102 Racetrack Road on Thursday, Dec. 18. The former Eye Care Associates/Hudson Headwaters Building has a new name, a new identity, and new occupants. The Ticonderoga Police Department celebrated the ribbon cutting on their brand new station, and department members, residents, and town officials who turned a dream into a reality couldn't have been more pleased at the final result. "I'm just happy we are finally at the finish line," said Ti Chief of Police Adam Hurlburt. Hosted by the Ticonderoga Area Chamber of Commerce, the ribbon cutting and project's completion represented a major step forward for the public safety and infrastructure for the Ticonderoga community. "This project reflects a shared commitment to ensuring that our police department has a functional, efficient, and modern space which to serve and protect Ticonderoga, our residents, and our many visitors," noted TACC President & CEO Matt Courtright. "Today's celebration is a reminder of what can be accomplished through collaboration and shared vision for our community." Ti Town Supervisor Mark Wright, an ardent supporter of the police department, noted that the former station on Burgoyne Road had outlived its useful years, was in poor physical condition, was never a proper size nor was it capable of being configured for efficient modern law enforcement operations. Purchased from Hudson Headwaters last year for $350,000, the upgraded 6,000 square foot building now rivals any modern police facility built from the ground up, but comes with a far lower price tag than a new build. Long term, the intention for the Racetrack Road municipal location is to eventually move the town courts to the upstairs of the building. "This day deserves some recognition. We have accomplished a monumental task which has been so daunting, so important, and yet so long in coming," said Ti Town Supervisor Mark Wright. "Our Town staff are the most important resource of this town's government, whether they carry a badge and a gun or a pencil. They deserve a safe, comfortable, clean environment in which to work. Ticonderoga requires a police department facility which is functional, cost-effective, secure, and comfortable from a human factors engineering perspective. That is what we have in this facility today." Wright said the new police station will be operational at a fraction of the cost of a new structure, avoid long-term loan debt in the general fund, allow faster occupation than new construction, and will eliminate increasing maintenance costs associated with the current facility while being more economically cost-efficient to operate. "We put our own skin in the game on this project to save whatever we could," Wright said, adding that staff jumped in to paint walls, assemble chair, desks, tables, modular cubicles, and shelving, installed hardware, performed minor plumbing and carpentry, and other tasks that would have increased the bottom line of the project if hired out. Wright gave special thanks to town council members Tom Thatcher and Dave Woods for their steadfast dedication in seeing the project through. "These two high-caliber individuals prefer to operate in the shadows to get the work done with no expectation for desire or recognition," the supervisor praised. "Tom and Dave accomplished Herculean efforts on this project that are not in their job description as town councilmen. They volunteered their time and talent because they love this town, they love this department, and they knew it was important to get this done once and for all. It was the right thing to do, and they were invested in the solution. This project would not have occurred without their cooperation, skills, and amazing efforts." Demolition of the interior took place over winter 2025, and remodeling officially began the third week of September. The new station features a holding room, a training room, a records, room, a booking room, a locker room, two interview rooms, an expanded evidence room and updated filing system, an entry lounge, a Chief's Office, a patrol room, a storage room, and an armory. "You can do this," Thatcher noted. "You don't have to spend millions of dollars to be successful, but it takes everybody; it takes a village. In this case, it takes a town." Dave Woods said, "If it wasn't for Mark Wright, none of this would have gotten accomplished. He was the one who got the money for it and was behind us the entire way to get the station done. He was the driving force and main ingredient in the entire project." The department will officially move into the new location in January.
