City Police make arrest in $10K Card Shop theft

PLATTSBURGH | A recent early morning break-in at a popular Plattsburgh business left owners and the community shocked by the brazen theft of rare Pokémon cards valued at more than $10,000. But with a detailed police investigation and community involvement, Plattsburgh City Police were able to make an arrest in the case and recover most of the stolen property. City Police were alerted to The Card Shop break-in at about 4 a.m. Dec. 5 after alarm activations. When officers arrived, they found significant damage to the glass door into the business and soon discovered that a man dressed in dark clothing and a facemask had used a hammer to smash the front door and gain access. The suspect then stole various amounts of rare Pokémon Trading Cards before fleeing the area. In total, the stolen property amounted to over $10,000. The Plattsburgh Police Department Detective Division continued the investigation and was able to develop several viable leads. Dozens of community members were interviewed, and ultimately, home security camera footage was used to identify the vehicle that the suspect fled in. After several days, the owner of the vehicle and their associates were identified. On Dec. 11, detectives and officers executed numerous search warrants, including on City Hall Place, in the Town of Plattsburgh and a vehicle. The searches recovered a significant amount of property, and police believe that most of the stolen property, as well as items used in the commission of the crime, were recovered. City Police Chief Jarrod Trombley said, "The Plattsburgh Police Department would like to recognize and thank the community for its assistance throughout this investigation." "It's the Community's trust and assistance that often provides the vital leads that assist in solving crimes." City Police later arrested Zachariah J. Jock, 25, of Plattsburgh on charges of third-degree burglary, third-degree grand larceny, third-degree criminal mischief and tampering with physical evidence. He was arraigned in Plattsburgh City Court Thursday evening and was released with an appearance ticket to return to court in January. The Plattsburgh Police Department thanked New York State Police and the Clinton County District Attorney's Office for their assistance in the investigation. Authorities said the investigation is ongoing, and further charges are anticipated.
