Former Wbg. three-sport coach Mike Perrone to mentor AA baseball team

WARRENSBURG | Mike Perrone, the most successful three-sport coach at Warrensburg High School for over 30 years or more, is now taking another major step forward in his career. After coaching Warrensburg Varsity Baseball for eight years — as well as football and basketball during his long tenure in Burgers' sports — he is moving on to coach varsity baseball at South Glens Falls, a far-larger AA school. On Nov. 10, the South Glens Falls school board chose Perrone as the coach over three or four other applicants. "I feel very blessed and humbled to be selected," Perrone said in a Nov. 12 phone call, adding that South Glens Falls has a very good baseball program. "They've been on the cusp of greatness and I'm hoping that we can take that next step as a program both on and off the field," Perrone said. "I'm really excited to get to work with these kids." Last month, he was chosen by the South Glens Falls school board to coach Freshman Basketball, and in that new position, he will likely be helping mentor the Bulldogs' varsity team. Additionally, he was selected by Union College last June to be an assistant coach for their football team. On Nov. 15, Union defeated Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute 28-21 and ended their season 7-0 in the Liberty League, essentially winning the conference's championship and earning a berth in the NCAA football playoffs. Last year, the Union football team was 2-4 in the league. When Perrone was coach of Warrensburg High School's baseball team, the Burghers annually competed for an Adirondack League Championship, and they won the league in 2024 and placed second in 2023. Last year, they were 9-3 in the league and 17-5 overall. In football, coaching Warrensburg and the subsequent Wolverines' merged programs, Perrone led his teams to an unprecedented win-loss record of 65-18, considered the best in Section II during that era. From 2015 through 2024, his football teams won three Section II championships and one regional title, and in 2022, they fought their way into the state Final Four. During last year's abbreviated season, the Wolverines were ranked No. 1 Class D team in the state. Since the Wolverines football merger four years ago through last fall, Perrone and his assistants led the Wolverines to a 29-2 record. Nov. 12, Perrone said he thoroughly enjoyed coaching at Warrensburg. "It's tough leaving Warrensburg and the baseball program behind. — I really love the kids that are now in the program or who have graduated — they are unbelievable," he said. "In a perfect world I would have been at Warrensburg for my entire career, coaching all three sports, but coaching for South Glens Falls is a great opportunity for me, since it's a double-A school." Perrone said that even though he has taken on the new positions, he will be continuing to teach Physical Education at Warrensburg Elementary School. Perrone said his Bulldogs baseball team has great prospects for the upcoming 2026 season. "We've got seven seniors coming back who are high-level players — all of them are committed athletes who play summer baseball and many of them want to play in college — and there's a great group of juniors," he said. As Perrone is a coach offseason with the Saratoga Stampede baseball team, he will be mentoring many of the South Glens Falls athletes, as well as their counterparts from Warrensburg and Lake George who are members of the team.. "Hopefully, I can help take the South Glens Falls baseball players to the next level, make some great memories with them and help them both on and off the field through character development," he added. "I hope to coach the athletes with a lot of positive energy, uplifting them." In his new position as the Bulldogs baseball coach, Perrone replaces Mike Leonbruno, who coached Perrone when he was a member of the Warrensburg football team before he graduated from WCS in 2010. Perrone said he has deep roots in Warrensburg and shares a lot of great memories with the Warrensburg baseball players and the school's other athletes, present and former. "I'll definitely miss the Warrensburg players and will be watching them from afar and help them in anything they might need — and hopefully be coaching some of them in summer ball," he said. "I'm always going to be there for them."
