Saranac girls race to state runner-up finish

QUEENSBURY | Section VII athletes delivered multiple podium performances at the NYSPHSAA cross country championships on Saturday, Nov. 15, at Queensbury High School, highlighted by the Saranac girls' runner-up finish in Class C and several standout individual medalists across Classes B, C and D. GIRLS Saranac earned Section VII's top team result of the day, placing second in the Class C girls race with 86 points — just nine behind champion Bronxville (77). Senior Sienna Boulds paced the Spartans with a career-best seventh-place finish in 18:53, one of two Section VII runners to medal in the class. Seventh-grader Addalyn Coryer followed in 31st (19:55), joined by senior Nora Mesc (43rd, 20:12), senior Laura Denial (20:18), eighth-grader Julia Ryan (58th, 20:38), eighth-grader Alexis LaClair (71st, 21:07) and sophomore Molly Thayer (99th, 22:15). Peru's Maddy Welc also reached the podium with a 17th-place finish in 19:17, while Saranac Lake's Nora Daley (30th, 19:51) and Asa Bruno (46th, 20:20), and Plattsburgh High's Abigail McClean (34th, 20:02) were the top additional Section VII finishers in Class C. In Class B, Beekmantown placed eighth with 207 points. Seventh-grader Jordanne Minchoff again led the Eagles, taking 53rd in 19:52, followed by Olivia Drowne (72nd, 20:19), Bristol Provost (81st, 20:32), Emily Marro (95th, 20:58), Addison Cartier (105th, 21:28), Ryleigh Baker (107th, 21:30) and Zilpha Irland (108th, 21:38). John Jay Cross River won the class with 46 points. Section VII's fastest girls' time of the meet came in Class D from Lake Placid eighth-grader Leila Fey, who medaled in eighth place in 18:49. Teammate Norah Francis, also an eighth-grader, claimed 15th in 19:51 as the Blue Bombers placed eighth overall with 160 points. Ruth Mahaney (82nd, 23:09), Holly Erenstone (84th, 23:17) and Rose Wenzler (109th, 25:57) rounded out the scoring. Additional Class D individuals included Moriah/Boquet Valley's Nataniela Medina (96th, 24:19), Seton Catholic's Gianna Cappiello (99th, 24:30), Ticonderoga's Aubrey Hayes (100th, 24:31) and Moriah/Boquet Valley's Karissa Costello (112th, 26:25). BOYS Saranac secured the highest boys' team finish for Section VII, taking third in Class C with 134 points behind East Aurora (30) and Irvington (98). Senior Sean Dormann led the Spartans, finishing 21st in 16:34, followed by Noah Thayer (60th, 17:26), Owen Dingman (71st, 17:37), Evan Barnes (76th, 17:42), Andrew Carter (77th, 17:45), Austin Lareau (84th, 18:03) and Adrian Barnes (98th, 18:26). AuSable Valley delivered two strong individual showings in Class C, with Reece Long finishing 23rd (16:41) and Jayden Campagna placing 33rd (16:56). Peru's Brennan Peters (42nd, 17:10), Saranac Lake's Emmett Vanbuskirk (51st, 17:18) and Peru's Michael Welc (65th, 17:31) rounded out the next-best Section VII runners. In Class B, Beekmantown junior Nolan Laidman recorded the fastest boys' time of the day for Section VII, crossing in 16:05 for 21st, one spot off the podium, as the Eagles finished ninth with 213 points. Supporting finishes came from Christopher Lincourt (81st, 17:23), Hayden Miller-Whipple (87th, 17:32), Loghan Strickland (92nd, 17:39), Patrick Rabideau (103rd, 17:58), Noah Trombly (105th, 18:02) and Escher Hoffman (107th, 18:04). Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake won the class with 66 points. Seton Catholic's Colby Chase earned Section VII's lone Class D boys' medal, placing 20th in 16:48. Ticonderoga finished seventh in the team standings behind James DeFranco (44th, 17:23), Noah Wells (50th, 17:30), Ollie Porter (79th, 18:33), Cooper Moore (92nd, 18:52), Matthew Michalak (104th, 19:09), Cameron Bennett (112th, 19:52) and Carter Mack (114th, 20:01). Other Class D individuals included Lake Placid's Graham Scull (65th, 17:59), Doug Guglielmi (67th, 18:04), Jim Guglielmi (71st, 18:14) and Jesse Carlson (109th, 19:40).
