Glens Falls Foundation announces $300K for area food pantries

GLENS FALLS | In response to the growing need for food assistance across the region, the Glens Falls Foundation has announced it will provide $300,000 in emergency funding to food pantries serving Warren, Washington, and northern Saratoga counties. To ensure that local families and individuals have access to nutritious food in this time of uncertainty, the Foundation is providing grants of $5,000 or $10,000 to more than 40 organizations. The Foundation is also supporting the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York, which serves food pantries in Warren, Washington, Saratoga and 20 other Northern New York counties. The Regional Food Bank will receive a $50,000 grant to support food pantries in the Glens Falls Foundation's service area. The Foundation's intent is to ensure that resources are distributed equitably to qualified community partners. The Food Panty recipients were identified with the assistance of the Tri-County United Way's regional network. Glens Falls Foundation grants are customarily based on applications from non-profits that are reviewed by its volunteer Distribution Committee. In this case, however, the Foundation is acting proactively; the grants were not solicited. "Our local food pantries are struggling to keep food on their shelves just as so many of our neighbors are struggling to put food on the table," said Donna Perkett, chair of the Glens Falls Foundation. "We hope our eﬀort might inspire other people, civic groups and businesses to join the many groups that are generously stepping up to help." The Foundation's food security initiative is similar to the emergency funding it provided to health care and human services organizations during the COVID pandemic. The Glens Falls Foundation is a non-profit community foundation that, since 1939, has worked to strengthen communities by supporting local nonprofits, investing in impactful projects, and responding to urgent needs as they arise, with the goal of enhancing the quality of life for all residents in the region. The Foundation's grants are decided by a Distribution Committee made up of Donna Perkett, chair; Mark Behan, vice chair; and members Jessica Botehlo, Esq., Dr. Jim Fuchs, Dr. Stacey Mandelbaum, Elizabeth Barton-Navitsky, and Dianne Shugrue. Laura Vamvalis is the business administrator of the Foundation.
