Laidman, Boulds capture Section VII cross country titles

ELIZABETHTOWN | Beekmantown's Nolan Laidman and Saranac's Sienna Boulds each claimed individual crowns Friday, Nov. 7, at the Section VII cross country championships at Cobble Hill Golf Course, posting the day's fastest overall times in their respective races to earn state-meet berths. Laidman, a junior, surged to the boys overall title in 15 minutes, 20 seconds, edging AuSable Valley sophomore Reece Long (15:31) and Seton Catholic junior Colby Chase (15:35) in a tightly bunched lead pack. Laidman led a group of nine runners who broke 16:30 on the rolling Elizabethtown course. Behind the front trio, Saranac senior Sean Dormann finished fourth in 15:45, followed by Peru junior Michael Welc (15:53) and Beekmantown senior Chris Lincourt (16:06). AuSable Valley sophomore Jayden Campagna placed seventh in 16:08, Saranac senior Noah Thayer took eighth in 16:14, Peru senior Brennan Peters was ninth in 16:19 and Saranac Lake junior Emmett VanBuskirk rounded out the top 10 in 16:20. The rest of the top 15 featured a balanced mix of returning qualifiers and newcomers: Saranac senior Keaton Daley (11th, 16:31), Ticonderoga sophomore James DeFranco (13th, 16:36), Ticonderoga sophomore Noah Wells (14th, 16:39), and AuSable Valley senior Celton Dupuis (15th, 16:41). In the girls race, Boulds, a senior standout for the Spartans, continued her postseason dominance by clocking 17:44, finishing more than 12 seconds clear of Lake Placid eighth-grader Leila Fey, who crossed in 17:57. Peru sophomore Maddy Welc was third in 18:10, with Saranac Lake freshman Nora Daley (18:19) and Beekmantown seventh-grader Jordanne Minchoff (18:28) close behind. Saranac Lake senior Asa Bruno placed sixth in 18:30, followed by Saranac eighth-grader Julia Ryan (18:49) and Lake Placid eighth-grader Norah Francis (18:50) to highlight the underclass depth across the section. Plattsburgh High senior Abigail McLean took ninth in 18:51, and Saranac seventh-grader Addalyn Coryer completed the top 10 at 18:54. Also among the top finishers were Saranac senior Nora Mesec (11th, 19:07), Beekmantown sophomore Olivia Drowne (12th, 19:08) and Saranac Lake sophomore Cadence Kennedy (14th, 19:16), as six different schools placed runners inside the top 15. Both Laidman and Boulds will lead their respective classes into the NYSPHSAA cross country championships on Saturday, Nov. 15, at Queensbury High School. — Boys Top-15 runners: 1.
