Moriah pulls away in second half to capture Class D title

MINEVILLE | Moriah used a dominant rushing attack and three second-half touchdowns to defeat Ticonderoga 31-14 in the Section VII Class D football championship Friday, Nov. 7, at Linney Field. After the teams were tied 8-8 at halftime, the Vikings (4-5) took control in the third quarter behind running back Jaydin Hughes. He capped consecutive drives with touchdown runs of 3 and 6 yards, helping Moriah build a 24-8 lead entering the fourth. Hughes finished with 195 yards on 27 carries and two scores. Austin Mandy added a 4-yard touchdown run with 1:55 left to seal the victory, and kicker Dane Spring converted the extra point for Moriah's final tally. Moriah opened the scoring in the first quarter when Joey Kazlo connected with Bo McGinness on a 40-yard touchdown, then hit Mandy for the conversion at 4:30. Ticonderoga drew even in the second on Blaek Peters' 2-yard run and a two-point pass from Jackson Dorsett to Ian Lender at 4:11. The Sentinels added a late score when Rowen Bechtold hauled in a 49-yard TD from Dorsett with 50 seconds left. Moriah outgained Ticonderoga 336-263 in total offense, rushing for 281 yards. Mason Feeley added 53 yards on 10 carries, while Mandy chipped in a touchdown run. Kazlo completed 4 of 6 passes for 55 yards and a score. For Ticonderoga, Dorsett went 7-for-11 passing for 87 yards and a touchdown and added 57 yards rushing.
