Cashman wins Assembly 115th District seat

PLATTSBURGH | Accepting the win for the Assembly 115th election early on Nov. 5, Michael Cashman said he was completely humbled to have earned the trust and support of North Country residents who voted for him. "I also want everyone to know that, as the district's next assemblyman, I will work doggedly on behalf of every constituent across the 115th Assembly district." He ran on the Democratic and Working Families party lines against Republican and Conservative Party candidate Brent Davison. The win was narrow across three counties, including a loss in Franklin County. The New York State Board of Elections tallied the unofficial count on their website. In Franklin County, Cashman lost by 262 votes. He earned 5,170 votes, 47.9 percent of participating voters, while Davison gained 5,432 votes, 50.41 percent of participating voters. In Essex County, Cashman won by 1,190 votes. The return for Cashman was 2,943 votes, 61.06 percent of the total, outpacing Davison's 1,753 votes at 36.37 percent. Another nearly 2.5 percent of votes (119 ballots) were left blank for this race in Essex County. In Clinton County, Cashman won by 686 votes. He garnered a total 11,322 votes for 51.14 percent of the poll, according to NYS Board of Elections data. Davison weighed in with 10,636 votes at 48.04 percent. The unofficial tally across the district puts the winning margin at 1,614 votes, or 4.28 percent. Clinton County, the largest bloc of 115th District voters, reports roughly 800 absentee ballots outstanding across the county, according to county Board of Elections Commissioner David Souliere IV. The election has to be certified by the state board of canvassers on or before 15 days after the election. The election has to be certified by the county by Nov. 29 and by the state on or before Dec. 15 under state election law. LOOKING FORWARD In speaking with district residents throughout the campaign, Cashman said he heard repeated concerns from all voters, regardless of party, on a trio of priorities: affordability, safety, and protecting the future. These form a strategic focus going forward, he said. "It's critical that, as I went across the district, affordability, being serious about safety and planning for the future are inclusive topics," he told the Sun shortly after returns came in. The concerns came from residents of all parties and walks of life. "These were the three main areas of concern expressed by the residents, and there are subsets to each one of them: Affordability as it relates to housing, making sure that seniors can age in place, and that new homeowners have the ability to buy homes. And our families need resources to help with affordable childcare. Safety as relates to fixing Raise the Age, and repealing the HALT act," Cashman said. "There is also an impending need to make sure our firefighters and police officers have the resources to support their work. Looking to the future, there is also a real need to invest in education and bring broadband and wastewater infrastructure to rural communities to benefit everyone." Cashman held his watch party on election night at the American Legion Post No. 20 on Quarry Road in Plattsburgh. Davison watched the returns from American Legion Post No. 1619 in Morrisonville. Davison conceded the race Thursday morning with a social media statement: "I would like to convey my deepest gratitude to all those who supported my campaign through generous donations and tireless efforts. I am grateful for the hard work of those who participated in door-to-door canvassing, attended events, and stood by me - including my wife, family, Governor (George) Pataki, Leader Barclay, Senator Stec, and the numerous Assembly members and staff who contributed to my campaign. I thank the Republican and Conservative chairs who endorsed me. I appreciate all those who voted for me; it is humbling. Although we gave it our all, we fell slightly short. I wish Michael Cashman and the district all the best," Davison said in the statement. The 115th Assembly seat was vacated by Billy Jones in early August, about 100 days before the General Election. Davison retired from his post as major and commander of New York State Police Troop B in Ray Brook to run for office. The election fulfills the one year remaining on Jones's term in state Assembly. The race for a full term will be held in Nov. 2026. Jones provided a lone Democratic voice from the North Country electorate among regional lawmakers and held the position for nine years. Cashman said that the Town of Plattsburgh will fill the supervisor's seat, likely beginning with interim leadership from Deputy Town Supervisor Charles A. Kostyk.
