Essex Co. early elections results tallied

ELIZABETHTOWN | While Essex County elections saw no contest in county-level positions, four town supervisor races were contested as voters headed to the polls Tuesday and in a surprising upset, the Willsboro supervisor seat was won with a successful write-in campaign. While 16 of the 18 supervisor seats were on the ballot, only a handful were contested, and some local elected posts drew no candidates, particularly for assessor in the towns of Essex, Moriah and two assessor seats in Wilmington. The Essex County Board of Elections noted that write-in candidates could fill those seats in each case, unless the person named declines after the election. Details of those contests were not immediately available Tuesday night. COUNTY ELECTIONS Essex County District Attorney Michael P. Langey ran unopposed for election on the Republican (R) and Conservative (C) party lines, drawing 7,507 votes. County Coroner saw two Republican candidates for the two positions: Jay E. Heald and Kellie M. Valentine, who received 6,298 and 6,097 votes, respectively. TOWN RACES Chesterfield Three candidates ran for two open seats on the Town Council in Chesterfield: Harrison Blaise (R), John S. Casey (R) and William Lyons (I). Casey received 359 votes, Blaise 302 and Lyons 131. Crown Point Clayton D. Menser Sr. (R,I) took the Crown Point Supervisor seat with 311 votes to Anita D. Johnson's 230. Two candidates sought two open seats on the Crown Point Town Council, Sherlene Simpson-Barrows (R) and Walter A. Worth (R), receiving 355 and 319 votes, respectively. Candidates for Superintendent of Highways were Bruce W. Burns Jr. (R) and David P. Cheney Sr. (I), with Burns receiving 325 votes to Cheney's 168. Crown Point Proposition: Local Law No. 1 would change the highway superintendent's term from two years to four years, commencing with the term that begins January 1, 2028. The law was approved with 275 yes votes to 233 no's. Elizabethtown Supervisor Cathleen Reusser-Bradley sought reelection, unopposed, receiving 308 votes. Peter A. Deming (R,I) was unopposed for town justice with 267 votes. Patti Doyle (R,I) claimed the clerk seat with 223 votes to Marietta Brady's 123. Two candidates also sought reelection to their seats on the Town Council, Adam N. Bailey (D,I) and William Wright Jr. (R), who received 211 and 220 votes, respectively. Jack D. Pulsifer (R) was the sole candidate for the Department of Public Works superintendent, receiving 210 votes, though there were 86 write-in votes cast in other bids for the position. Essex Ken Hughes ran as an Independent for reelection as town supervisor and will return with 168 votes. Alicia Kelly (R,I) was unopposed for town clerk/tax collector, receiving 153 votes. Two candidates sought two open seats on the Town Council: Erin C. Hall (D) and Scott Hurlburt (D), receiving 163 and 177 votes respectively. Kyle Wrisley (R) was unopposed for superintendent of highways with 142 votes. The assessor's position in Essex was vacant on the ballot, but saw 27 write-in votes cast. Jay Two candidates sought the supervisor's seat in Jay: Daniel Mark Deyoe (R,I) and Matthew Stanley (D,I). In a close race, early unofficial numbers saw Stanley returning to office with a slim lead of 487 votes to Deyoe's 465. Carol Greenley Hackel (R) was the sole candidate for town clerk with 623 votes. Four candidates ran for two open seats on the Town Council: Archie R. Depo (I), Stephen L. Forbes (R,I), Robin Licari (D,I) and Knut Sauer (D,I). Fobes and Sauer took the seats with 473 and 461 votes, respectively. Licari received 435 and Depo 244. Chris Sorrell (D) was unopposed for the superintendent of highways post and received 704 votes. Lori Duchame (R) was unopposed for tax collector with 632 votes. Keene Incumbent Town Supervisor Joe Pete Wilson (D) took the lead to retain his seat with 86 votes to Roger Allen's 68. Robert M. Biesemeyer (D,I) and Teresa Cheetham-Palen (D) ran for reelection to their Town Council seats with 103 and 101 votes, respectively. Ryan Hall (R,I) was unopposed for superintendent of highways with 94 votes. Barbara Dwyer received 122 votes as town justice. No candidates petitioned for the open town clerk/tax collector seat in Keene, but 34 write-in votes were cast for the position. Lewis Timothy J. Pierce (R,I) was unopposed for supervisor in Lewis, collecting 275 votes, while Brianne Drummond (R) was unopposed for town clerk with 242 John Blades (R) and Terry Lee Pulsifer Jr. (R) were on the ballot for the two open seats on the Town Council, receiving 230 and 234 votes, respectively. James Monty (R) ran unopposed for town justice, receiving 233 votes. Kevin M. Denton (R) was unopposed for superintendent of highways with 269 votes, while Kathleen Robertson (R) was unopposed for tax collector with 255 votes. Minerva In Minerva, Stephen R. McNally (D,I) ran unopposed in his reelection bid as town supervisor with 162 votes. Keith E. Dubay (R) and Douglas S. McCall (R) sought the two open seats on the Town Council, receiving 141 and 111 votes, respectively. Theresa Fish (D) was unopposed for town clerk/tax collector with 164 votes, while Jonathan L. Fish (R,I) secured the superintendent of highways seat unopposed with 144 votes. Patrick C. Strohmeyer (D) collected 155 votes for town justice in his unopposed race. Moriah Matthew J. Brassard (R) will return as town supervisor with 528 votes in his unopposed campaign. James Curran (R) and Nathan Gilbo (R) secured the two open seats on the Town Council, receiving 423 and 486 votes, respectively. No candidate petitioned for the assessor's seat in Moria,h though there were 13 write-in votes. Newcomb Mary D. Lamphear (R,I) was also unopposed for supervisor in Newcomb with 170 votes, while Bethebelle Poulin (R) was unopposed for town clerk with 185. Three candidates sought two open seats on the Town Council: Lana A. Fennessy (D, I), Jen Fifield (D, I) and Mark T. Yandon (R). Fennessey received 154 votes, Yandon 139 and FiField 106. Clifford Demars (R) was unopposed for superintendent of highways with 169 votes. There are no candidates on the ballot for tax collector in Newcomb, due to a change in the position. The Town Council previously voted to abolish the position and combine it with the town clerk's job. According to the Essex County Board of Elections, the current tax collector will fill out her position through the end of 2025 and the town clerk/tax collector will be combined. North Elba Richard Preston (D,R,I) was unopposed for town supervisor, receiving 1,948 votes. Jason C. Leon (D,I) and Jack Moulton (D,R,I) were uncontested for the two open Town Council seats, receiving 1,557 and 1,653 votes, respectively. No candidate petitioned to run for town justice in North Elba and the ballot was vacant, though there were 97 write-in votes. North Hudson Two candidates sought the two open seats on the Town Council, Brian DeZalia (R, I) and Larry Koller (R), receiving 100 and 94 votes, respectively. Two candidates sought the town justice seat in North Hudson, Deborah Duntley (I) and Sally Wachowski (R, I) with 59 and 73 votes, respectively. Bruce E. Caza (R) collected 88 votes for assessor in North Hudson. Schroon Meg Wood (I) was uncontested for supervisor in Schroon and saw 424 votes in the early unofficial numbers. Three candidates sought two open seats on the Town Council: Rose Behrens-Merrill (R,I), Leanna Welch (R,I) and David Williams (I). Welch received 517 votes, Williams 314 and Behrens-Merrill 287. For Town of Schroon town justice, two candidates sought the seat Mark S. Granger, Esq. (D,I) and Tracy Hanchett (R,I) and it was a close race Tuesday night with Granger only six votes ahead with 267 votes to Hanchett's 261. Neil Chippendale (I) was unopposed for the assessor's post with 314 votes. St. Armand Davina Thurston (I) was unopposed for supervisor of St. Armand with 252 votes, while Raine DeLancett (D) was the sole candidate for town clerk with 309. John Paul O'Neil (R) and Raymond Tempestilli (C) were unopposed for two open seats on the town council, receiving 252 and 137 votes respectively. Douglas E. Snickles Jr (R,I) was also unopposed for superintendent of highways, collecting 299 votes while Jennifer L. Fuller (R) saw 288 votes in her unopposed bid for tax collector. Ticonderoga James F. O'Bryan (R) was elected as the new supervisor of Ticonderoga as the longtime former judge launched an officially unopposed bid and collected 1,090 votes. Four candidates sought two seats on the Town Council: Laura Best (D, I), Joyce Cooper (R,I), Tom Cunningham (D,I), and David Woods (R). Best received 685 votes, Woods 672, Cooper 574 and Cunningham 378. With two positions open for town justice in Ticonderoga, three candidates were on the ballot: Thomas C. Dedrick (R,I), Philippe R. LaPerle (R,I) and Brenda M. Wells (R,I). Dedrick received 843 votes, LaPerle 778 and Wells 458. Westport Michael K. Tyler (R,I) was unopposed for reelection as town supervisor and received 280 votes. Two candidates sought two open seats on the Town Council: Steven E. Viens (D) and Eric Westover (R,I), receiving 281 and 222 votes, respectively. Willsboro While there were two official candidates on the ballot in a race for town supervisor, Darren P. Dickerson (R,I) and Shaun G. Gilliland, a sweeping majority of write-in candidates indicated that Tracie McGill saw an overwhelmingly successful write-in campaign for the seat. Incumbent supervisor Gilliland publicly stepped down from the ballot and received only 11 votes following his rescinded bid. Dickerson received 285 votes. A breakdown of the 494 write-in votes for supervisor was not immediately available, though Tracie McGill appeared to be the top choice as the next supervisor. With two open seats on the Town Council, three candidates were on the ballot: Scott A. Christian (R,I), Victor J. Putman (D,I) and Lorilee M. Sheehan (R,I). Putman received 471 votes, Christian, 465 and Sheehan 415. Susan Thompson (R,I) has successfully retained her seat as town clerk/tax collector with 533 votes to Maegan Santillo's 208. Tricia J. Sheehan (R,I) was unopposed for town justice with 539 votes. Travis J. Crowningshield (R,I) was also unopposed for superintendent of highways. Wilmington Though current Supervisor Favor J. Smith (R, I) was named on the ballot, he had withdrawn from the race, leaving Timothy John Follos (I) on the facing a write-in campaign announcement from Sam Haselton. Follos received 81 votes to 53 write-ins. There were four candidates on the ballot for two open seats on the town council: Hanna Cromie (D), Mindy Goddeau (I), Karl Von Entress (R) and Randy Winch (I). In unofficial early numbers, Winch received 78, Cromie 73, Goddeau 45 and Von Entress with 16, though there were 49 write-in votes cast. Dawn Stevens (R,I) ran unopposed for town clerk/tax collector with 102 votes. Three candidates vyed for Town of Wilmington superintendent of highways: Louis P. Andragna (R,I), Cameron Grady (I) and Darren Lawrence (I). Andragna saw 66 votes to Grady's 55 and Lawrence's 12. No candidate filed to run for the open four-year term as assessor or the three-year unexpired term as assessor, though there were a number of write-in votes cast. New York State Election Law requires a complete recanvass of all votes cast during Early Voting and on Election Day, and the canvass of all valid early mail, absentee, military/overseas, special, and affidavit (provisional) ballots before any election results can be certified. Final voting numbers and information will be certified in the coming weeks. STATE PROPOSITION With about 87 percent of the vote counted by 1 a.m. statewide, the state Board of Elections reported Prop. 1 to allow skiing and trail facilities at the Olympic Sports Complex at Mt. Van Hoevenberg was approved by voters earning 1,721,260 "yes" votes and 1,599,791 "no" votes, which is 45.42 percent of voters in favor and 42.21 percent against the measure. Another 467,541 voters -- 12.34 percent -- left the ballot blank. The amendment allows expansion of skiing and related trail facilities on state forest preserve land, requiring an addition of 2,500 acres to the Adirondack State Park forest. Essex County voters approved the measure 7,216 to 3,364. This article will be updated with reactions and more information as it becomes available.
