Chazy outlasts Boquet Valley in penalty-kick shootout

PLATTSBURGH | Chazy captured the Section VII Class D girls soccer championship in dramatic fashion Saturday, Nov. 1, edging Boquet Valley 3-2 in a six-round penalty-kick shootout after 110 scoreless minutes at Plattsburgh High. The Eagles trailed 2-0 after three rounds of penalties but converted their final three attempts while goalkeeper Calleigh Clark stopped two down the stretch to complete the comeback. Aubrey Bechard buried the decisive sixth-round kick to seal Chazy's sectional title. "Um, I was terrified," Bechard joked. "In practice, we always take PKs, and I'm always the one who's not taking them. I'm obviously on defense, and I'm not used to shooting. I was so scared, but I just had to walk in and think, 'I've got to do this for my team and to win the sectional championship.'" No. 12-ranked Boquet Valley gained the upper hand early when Claire Reynolds and Emma Hance converted in the opening three rounds. But Peyton Turek and Stephanie Barriere answered for Chazy before Bechard delivered the clincher. Clark made two key saves to turn the tide in favor of the Eagles, who advanced from a second consecutive penalty-kick shootout. "I think last week versus Lake Placid (in the semifinals), it really prepared us for the worst," Clark said. "Going into it, we knew that we've been practicing PKs, and I think that really helped. We didn't get down on ourselves, and we supported each other." During regulation, the best scoring chance came with 13:42 remaining, when Chazy's Marin Juneau broke free inside 10 yards but struck the far-side post. No. 16-ranked Chazy held a 9-7 edge in shots on goal, with Clark making seven saves and Boquet Valley's Ella Pulsifer nine. "Gwyn Compeau did a great job as always against the Division II MVP in Claire Reynolds," Chazy head coach John Tregan said. "One kid who really deserves a lot of credit that others may not notice is Sylvie Brassard. Halfway through our season, we lost Calleigh to an injury and didn't really know if we would get her back. Sylvie was thrown into the fire and did a great job holding down the fort for us for pretty much the entire second half of the league schedule. "Without her, we never get the seed we do and probably never get this far. She deserves a ton of credit for today, and that's not lost on me. Calleigh, although not always asked to do a lot or face high pressure, really shows up in big spots when we need her." Chazy advanced to face the Section X champion in a NYSPHSAA Class D regional at noon on Saturday, Nov. 8, at Potsdam High School.
