Peru rallies past Beekmantown in 2OT to capture Class A title

CHAMPLAIN | Peru overcame a 2-0 deficit with 25:05 left in regulation to capture its first Section VII girls soccer championship in more than a decade Wednesday, Oct. 29, upsetting No. 15 Beekmantown 3-2 in double overtime in the Class A final at Northeastern Clinton. The win marked Peru's first sectional title since 2014, when it was the lone Class A representative, and its first championship game victory since 2010, a 1-0 victory over Plattsburgh High in the Class B final. Reese Duprey delivered the winner for the Nighthawks with 7:38 left in the second overtime, converting a setup from Chloe Campbell to complete Peru's comeback and secure its long-awaited title. The golden goal capped a second-half surge. "I just saw the ball came at me, and I just tried to go over the goalie because I know Meegan (Burdo) was right there, so I tried to kind of loft it over," Duprey said. "But it all happened so fast, and Chloe made a great little touch." The Nighthawks forced overtime late in regulation after Campbell drew a foul inside the penalty area. Sprinting down the left sideline, she combined with Duprey on a give-and-go before being hauled down in the box. Senior standout Maggie Garrow buried the penalty kick with 4:45 remaining to tie the match at 2-2 and shift the momentum toward Peru. That equalizer came after Bella Berry cut the deficit in half midway through the second stanza. Berry finished off a pass from Duprey at the 25:04 mark, giving Peru its first goal and new life after a sluggish opening half. "I always find that we're a second-half team," Garrow said. "We do our best work in the second half. But we definitely did it today with the motivation of each other, our coaches. "I have not been to the sectional finals since I was in seventh grade, so a lot of emotions are here tonight, and we just knew it's now or never." Beekmantown had controlled play early, striking twice within the first 14 minutes to seize command. Olivia Hagadorn put the Eagles ahead 1-0 just 7:40 into the game on a finish assisted by Olivia Miller. Six minutes later, Miller made it 2-0 on a setup from Carly Hagadorn as Beekmantown dominated possession and forced the action into Peru's defensive third. From that point forward, Peru's defense and goalkeeper Kori Lamoy steadied the match. Lamoy made 10 saves, including several key stops late, as the Nighthawks tightened their shape. The Eagles outshot Peru 12-7, with Burdo finishing with four saves. The result ended Beekmantown's bid for a third consecutive sectional championship. Peru, meanwhile, completed a Section VII postseason that included a 2-0 semifinal upset of state-ranked Plattsburgh High, a match in which Garrow scored both goals. Peru now advances to the NYSPHSAA Class A sub-regional round, where it will face Section 2's Schalmont or Broadalbin-Perth. "I think over the years, everyone's always looked at us as the underdogs," Garrow said. "'Oh, don't worry about this game. We'll be fine.'
