Grant awarded for Ti Backpack Program

TICONDEROGA | Pearsall Adirondack Foundation recently awarded a $5,000 grant to Ticonderoga Central School for their food distribution programs, which help eligible children to eat healthy. These programs include both the Weekend Backpack Program that runs throughout the school year and a summer food program, which runs for eight weeks in July and August when the free breakfasts and lunches at school are not available. This grant was underwritten by the Glenn and Carol Pearsall Adirondack Foundation, which is dedicated to improving the quality of life for year-round residents of the Adirondack Park. "We very much appreciate their continuing support, which enables us to provide local kids with added nutrition that helps these children take better advantage of the growth and educational opportunities they have at school," expressed Backpack Program President John Bartlett. The Backpack Program is a joint effort between Ticonderoga Central Schools and the Ticonderoga Area Backpack Program, which sends eligible students home each Friday with backpacks filled with nutritious foods to help them eat healthy over the weekend. Thanks to the very generous support the program has received from donors and charitable organizations like the Pearsall Adirondack Foundation, the backpack program at Ticonderoga schools has been able to grow and serve more eligible students. The program began in January 2013 and is now serving 84 students from Ticonderoga Central Schools in the 2025-2026 school year. Ticonderoga Area Backpack Program also works with other local area schools on their backpack programs. This includes Crown Point Central, Putnam Central, Schroon Lake, Moriah Central, Peru Central and Willsboro schools. In total, the local area Backpack Program serves 300 students at seven local area schools. The grants provided by the Pearsall Adirondack Foundation have enabled this expansion and have allowed many more local area students to benefit from this additional nutrition. Thanks to tremendous support from volunteers, one hundred percent of all donations is used to purchase the food to fill the backpacks from the Regional Food Bank of Northeast NY. The Regional Food Bank plans the menus and orders the food. The hope is to be able to continue to grow and expand the program to serve more and more children.
