Wolverines show strength against Stillwater

LAKE GEORGE | Rebounding from the prior week's shutout loss, the Warrensburg-Lake George/Bolton Wolverines put up a strong fight Oct. 24 against state-ranked Stillwater-Saratoga Catholic, although they lost 47-21. Wolverines coach John Irion said his players fought hard. "This is the best overall game we have played so far with our young team," he said. Seniors Liam Foy, Will Briscoe and Owen Jones each executed 10 tackles over the game, while junior Alyas Kennedy and sophomore Ryan Roemer recorded eight apiece. On offense, the Wolverines punched through Stillwater's tough defense enough times to accumulate a respectable score. The game's first two touchdowns were achieved by Stillwater: one in the first quarter, and another in the second, both on six-yard runs by quarterback Aidan Callanan. The Wolverines' defense shut down the Warriors' two conversion attempts. Then, Wolverines' halfback Owen Jones passed to sophomore J.J. Long for a 16-yard touchdown, and Jones' conversion run was successful. Stillwater responded with a drive ending in a touchdown off a six-yard pass play. In the third quarter, the Warriors scored another touchdown, but the Wolverines stymied the conversion attempt. At this point, the Wolverines didn't give up, although they were trailing 7 to 25: Jones energized Wolverines' fans by running 63 yards for a touchdown. The Warriors responded with a touchdown and a conversion via the air, adding 8 points to their score. In the fourth quarter, Stillwater scored another touchdown, but soon after, the Wolverines struck back with a 64-yard touchdown by Jones, and the extra point kick by senior Thomas Kohls was good. Stillwater concluded the game's scoring with a touchdown on an 18-yard run, but the Wolverines squelched their conversion attempt. Over the game, Jones rushed for 185 yards on nine carries, and Briscoe gained 13 yards on four carries. Also running the ball for the Wolverines were Roemer, Kennedy, and sophomore Will Sheldon. "I am very proud of how our players fought in this game," coach Irion said. Although the loss excluded the Wolverines from the Section II playoffs, they will be playing a crossover game this coming weekend against an opponent to be determined Oct. 27.
