Garrow scores twice, Peru upsets PHS

PLATTSBURGH | Peru advanced to the Section VII Class A girls soccer final with a 2-0 upset victory over 23rd-ranked Plattsburgh High Friday evening, Oct. 24. Maggie Garrow scored both goals in the second half to secure the win. Reese Duprey set up the first goal at the 15-minute mark with a well-timed pass to Garrow, who calmly placed the ball in the back of the net. Garrow later converted a free kick past the wall for her second goal, giving Peru a 2-0 advantage. Peru outshot the Hornets 5-2. Kori Lynne Lamoy recorded two saves for Peru, while Plattsburgh's Katelyn McCormick made three saves. Peru head coach Mike Considine praised the team's performance on the road against a talented PHS squad, noting the players' consistent effort throughout the season. The Nighthawks will face top-seeded Beekmantown at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 29, at Northeastern Clinton. Class B Saranac 5, Saranac Lake 1 SARANAC | Eve Liberty recorded a second-half hat trick to propel Saranac past Saranac Lake, 5-1, in the Section VII Class B girls soccer semifinals Friday. The Spartans broke open a 1-1 halftime tie with four unanswered goals over the final 40 minutes to advance to the sectional championship match. Liberty converted a penalty kick early in the second half to give Saranac the lead for good, then added two more tallies — one off a feed from Izzy Bergevin and another assisted by Julia Ryan — to complete the hat trick. Kendra Mulverhill opened the scoring for Saranac in the first half off an assist from Alyse Liberty, while Lily Brown added an unassisted goal midway through the second half to make it 4-1. Saranac Lake briefly pulled even late in the opening half when Tyler Burth scored off a setup from Ellie Willett, but the Red Storm were unable to generate consistent pressure afterward. Saranac outshot Saranac Lake 19-2 and controlled possession throughout much of the match. Addison Castine made one save for the Spartans, while Emma Akey stopped 14 shots in goal for Saranac Lake. Northeastern Clinton 2, AuSable Valley 0 CHAMPLAIN | Second-seeded Northeastern Clinton advanced to the Section VII Class B girls soccer championship with a 2-0 win over AuSable Valley on Friday, Oct. 24. Brynn Hite scored both goals for the Cougars, finding the net in each half. Hite opened the scoring at 16:43 of the first half off a pass from Ella Lafountain, then doubled the lead at 22:18 of the second half on an assist from Maddie Arno. NCCS outshot AuSable Valley 10-3. Peyton Scott recorded three saves, while AuSable Valley's Lula Pfendler stopped eight shots. Northeastern Clinton head coach Tim Surprenant credited AuSable Valley's preparation and effort but said he was proud of his team's ability to dig deep and finish the game strong. Class D Chazy 5, Keene 1 CHAZY | Second-seeded Chazy advanced to the Section VII Class D girls soccer semifinals with a 5-1 victory over No. 7 Keene on Wednesday, Oct. 22, at George Brendler Field. Marin Juneau led the Eagles with two first-half goals, scoring in the 14th and 20th minutes to help Chazy build a commanding 3-0 lead at halftime. Peyton Turek added another goal in the 31st minute off an assist from Avery Parker. Emma Howell extended the advantage early in the second half with a pair of goals, assisted by Sophia Lynch and Juneau. Keene's Juliana Tremblay spoiled the shutout in the 72nd minute with help from Elsa Jacobson. Chazy outshot Keene 18-2. Calleigh Clark and Sylvie Brassard combined for one save in net for the Eagles, while Keene goalkeeper Anabella Blacksmith finished with 14 saves.
