NRDC unveils storybook sculptures at Black Watch Library

TICONDEROGA | The exterior of Black Watch Memorial Library felt a little brighter on Friday, Oct. 24, despite a chill in the air and gray fall skies. North Country Rural Development Coalition (NRDC), with the assistance of a private foundation, unveiled their latest contribution to Ti's public art scene: six bronze storybook sculptures by the Robert James Workshop of the United Kingdom, officially known as the Enchanted Storybook Garden. "This project brings imagination, art, and education together in such a meaningful way," remarked library trustee Steve Boyce. "It truly represents the mission of public libraries- especially the Black Watch Memorial. This project is what we are all about." The sculptures were shipped across the pond to Ticonderoga a few weeks back and installed on the Black Watch Memorial Library grounds. Featuring timeless literary characters Peter Rabbit, Alice in Wonderland, the White Rabbit, Winnie the Pooh, Christoper Robin, and Mother Goose, and bring a noticeable upgrade and pop of color to the library's grounds, which were also freshly relandscaped by Tony DeFranco and his team at DeFranco Landscaping. The result is a charming spread of whimsy, fairy tale, and an inviting facade to the red brick library from the early 20th century. "The cultural arts contribute to the social, cultural, and economic well-being of Ticonderoga… They enhance the quality of life for our residents while also bringing visitors to downtown and local businesses," noted Town Board member and the Town's library liaison, Joyce Cooper. "I cannot wait to see children looking at and touching these sculptures, which bring the characters to life for them." There was zero cost to taxpayers to bring the newest public art to town for all to enjoy, and the hope is that the sculptures will capture the imaginations of youngsters and help inspire a lifetime of reading. "This library is the backbone of our community, our youth, and their education," noted NRDC President & CEO Nicle Justice Green. Green invited the children in the audience to come up and help her reveal the first sculpture, Beatrix Potter's Peter Rabbit, a magical moment that embodied what the project was all about. The Enchanted Storybook Garden was also made possible thanks to New York State Homes and Community Renewal (HRC).
