Frechette, Blaise-Smith propel Peru to 27-0 shutout

CLINTONVILLE | Peru extended its undefeated season Friday, Oct. 17, with a 27-0 victory over AuSable Valley, powered by a standout performance from Brody Blaise-Smith on the ground and a defense that recorded its second shutout. Blaise-Smith powered the 16th-ranked Nighthawks with 86 rushing yards and two touchdowns on eight carries. He put Peru on the board with a 6-yard run in the final minute of the first quarter, then broke free for a 47-yard score early in the second to make it 14-0. Quarterback Jake Frechette extended the lead with a 10-yard touchdown pass to Trent Taylor late in the second quarter, and added a 7-yard rushing touchdown in the fourth to close out the scoring. Frechette completed 13 of 20 passes for 140 yards and a touchdown and rushed for 20 yards and a score. He surpassed the 1,000-yard passing mark, bumping his season total to 1,125. Taylor led the receiving corps with four catches for 51 yards, while Chase Carpenter hauled in four receptions for 75 yards. Peru racked up 306 total yards of offense, including 166 on the ground, while limiting the Patriots to just 87 yards of total offense. "Honestly, I think we finally started blocking," Taylor said. "Once we get our blocking down, we just keep on driving. "(Frechette) gives us the ball, and it's not like we just have one person. We've got all four of us. Yeah, it definitely makes it easier — if I get covered, we go to Mason (Starke). If he's covered, we've got Chase. Then we've got Blake (Porter) or Isaiah (Hendrix)." Deon Lawyer led AuSable Valley with 63 rushing yards on 14 carries. Quarterback Aiden Blaise completed two passes for 25 yards. The Nighthawks improved to 7-0 with the win. "AuSable's a really good football team," Peru head coach Ryon O'Connell said. "Their defense is solid. We've been watching them all year, and they have a really good defense. "We focused on stopping their run game, and I thought we did a decent job on that. Offensively, we hit some good plays. "I thought we played good football.
