NW boys beat Corinth, clinch league playoff bid

CORINTH | North Warren secured a berth in the Adirondack League championship playoffs by defeating Corinth 2-1 on Oct. 8 following a 6-0 win over the Hadley-Luzerne Eagles two days earlier. After a rematch with the Eagles on Oct. 10 which they won 7-0, they had won seven consecutive games. The victories earned the Cougars a No. 4 seed in the tournament, and as of Oct. 12, they were eager to take on No. 1 ranked Lake George in a league championship semifinal to be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday Oct. 15 on the Lakers' soccer field. Cougars' coach Jim Conway described the matchup with Corinth as an "epic battle." Most all of the first half exhibited tough defense from both sides, but with eight minutes remaining in the first half, a foul in the box earned Riverhawks' Noah Thompson a penalty kick which earned Corinth a point. Six minutes later, however, North Warren's Connor Hill scored on a penalty kick. The second half was also a physical battle, coach Conway said, describing the gameplay as "a battle of wills with bodies banging and stamina tested." He said that Corinth goalkeeper Michael Petteys made three "spectacular" saves, one after another, repelling shots made by Cougar senior Coleman Swartz. But with less than half a minute left in regulation, North Warren senior Coleman Swartz took a pass and dribbled past multiple defenders. Reaching the end line, he kicked a shot that slipped past defenders and went into the net with 17 seconds left remaining, Conway said. "There was a lot of drama when Coleman scored that goal," he said. "It was amazing." The Cougars outshot Corinth 19-6. Coach Conway added that he was very proud of his team. "The guys were competing with real passion and determination," he said. "They played their hearts out." He said both teams put forth remarkable effort. "It was truly a great contest — both teams left it all on the field," he said. NORTH WARREN 6, HADLEY-LUZERNE 0 On Oct 6, the Cougars competed with Hadley-Luzerne on the Eagles' turf, and Coleman Swartz scored five of his team's goals in the Cougars' 6-0 victory. Senior Nick Heckman shot the Cougars' other goal. Junior Connor Hill tallied two assists, while senior Connor Clench-Matteo and eighth-grader Hudson Gadjo each contributed an assist. NORTH WARREN 7, HADLEY-LUZERNE 0 On Oct. 10, North Warren hosted Hadley-Luzerne for their Senior Night game, and the Cougars won the rematch 7-0 with four of their 12-graders leading the effort. Nick Heckman executed four goals in the contest, raising his season goal count to 15; Connor Clench-Matteo recorded his first career goal; and Coleman Swartz added two more goals and 1 assist, increasing his 2025 goal tally to 20. Senior goalkeeper Will Lindsley made two dramatic saves to preserve the shutout, while junior center midfielder Connor Hill contributed three assists. Heckman, Clench-Matteo, Swartz, and Lindsley plus senior A.J. Masiello were recognized in a pre-game ceremony for their accomplishments, as it was their last regular-season soccer game in high school.
