Wolverines lose to Canajoharie, but gain experience

CANAJOHARIE | A motivated Canajoharie/Fort Plain football team defeated the Warrensburg-Lake George/Bolton Wolverines Oct. 10 by a score of 39-16, as the game was a must-win for Canajoharie to qualify for the post-season playoffs. The matchup served as a learning experience for the Wolverines, with their powerful running game being contained and most of their yardage gained through passing. The Wolverines' sophomore quarterback Ryan Roemer threw for 122 yards while rushing yardage was limited to 108 yards on 34 carries. The Wolverines demonstrated their receiving depth as five different players caught passes. Senior Owen Jones, the season's initial quarterback who was moved to halfback/receiver to spark the offense, caught a 60-yard pass from Roemer and scored a touchdown, energizing the Wolverines' fans. Another highlight was Wolverine sophomore J.J. Long intercepting a pass late in the game. Staffed with eight players new to football, the Wolverines are learning the skills and strategies as the season progresses, according to coach John Irion. "It was a tough loss. We had a great opening drive, but it stalled out at the five-yard line," he said," We need to finish in the red zone." He added that his players need to boost their focus on ball-possession and improve adherence to play calls. "Fumbles and miscues are still happening," he said, noting that overall, both his younger players and veteran athletes "continue to improve." The loss demoted the Wolverines to 3-2 for the season while Canajoharie-Fort Plain improved to 3-3. Next up for the Wolverines is a game at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct 18 against Cambridge-Salem at Cambridge High School. Cambridge-Salem was the 2024 Section II Class D runner-up champion — and in the last nine years, they have won four Section II titles and three state championships. This season, as of Oct. 12 they have a 5-1 record, losing only to Greenwich, the 2025 divisional leader.
