Warren Co. Computer Upcycling drop-off set for Oct. 18

GLENS FALLS | Zero Waste Warren County in partnership with Elfun Computer Rehab has announced the first special computer drive for the repair and reuse of old computers and equipment to take place in Warren County. If you have unwanted computer equipment - including laptops, desktops, tablets, printers, hard drives, cables, and power cords - piling up in a closet, you'll want to take advantage of this environmentally sound opportunity to donate them to a good cause. Non-functional and out-of-date equipment will all be accepted. Your old computers, hard drives, printers, and other peripherals will be refurbished and donated to schools and nonprofit organizations that cannot afford new equipment. All hard drives will be wiped clean. Repair and reuse — upcycling — is superior to scrapping and recycling electronic equipment. Repair and reuse uses less energy and conserves resources far better than recycling. Repair and reuse also provides many benefits to communities. On Saturday, Oct. 18, from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., drop off your unwanted computer equipment at the Zero Waste Warren County table under a canopy outside the new Glens Falls Farmers Market building at 57 South St. Zero Waste volunteers will be on hand staffing the booth. Elfun Computer Rehab volunteers in Schenectady refurbish used computers and accessories and then donate them to schools and nonprofit organizations that cannot afford new equipment. Since 1993, Elfun has donated over 18,000 computer systems. Equipment that cannot be rehabbed will be responsibly recycled. "These computer collection events are very popular," said Tracy Frisch, coordinator of Zero Waste Warren County. She has been involved in three computer drives with Elfun Computer Rehab in Albany. "People are really pleased to be able to pass along their unwanted electronic equipment to a good home." Elfun Computer Rehab accepts all computers, including desktops, tablets, laptops, printers, flat screen computer monitors OVER 19 inches, and related accessories such as chargers, cables, drives, etc. But please note that Elfun DOES NOT ACCEPT CRT monitors. Zero Waste Warren County is the 6-year-old citizens group that puts on the Glens Falls Repair Café in partnership with the Crandall Public Library. Zero Waste was also behind the food scraps collection effort at the Glens Falls Farmers Market that volunteers launched in 2023 and kept going through this past winter. Zero Waste Warren County also advocates for Zero Waste infrastructure and programs at the County level, such as the food waste composting facility and central recycling facility, both of which are planned by Warren County.
