Wolverines thrashed by Greenwich, 57-0

LAKE GEORGE | Last October, the Greenwich High School football team was undefeated until mid-October when it ran into Warrensburg-Lake George/Bolton, who overwhelmed them 43-0, five days before the Wolverines' season was cancelled by school administrators due to an incident involving two Lake George athletes' misconduct. Despite the rout, Greenwich advanced to win the Section II Class D championship and competed in a state semifinal game, which they lost in overtime. This year, after losing nine skilled players to graduation and others angered over the school administrators' decision, the Wolverines started their 2025 season with two wins under a new coach — John Irion, armed with decades of experience — chosen by Lake George administrators. In the first two games this year, the short-handed Wolverines prevailed over their opponents, regardless of their players' collective inexperience: eight of the Wolverines had never played football, but they demonstrated their athleticism and will-to-win. On Sept. 26, however, the Wolverines' winning ways were derailed as Greenwich, state-ranked No. 2 in Class D, overwhelmed the Wolverines 57-0. After each team committed a fumble in the two initial drives, Greenwich senior quarterback Ryan Ingber ran about half the field, shaking off Wolverine defenders, for a touchdown. Minutes later, he executed another lengthy touchdown run: pursued by Wolverines, he concluded his yardage gain by diving into the end zone. On the first play of the second quarter, Ingber threw a long pass directly into the hands of receiver Ethan Mullen, who jumped to receive the throw and plunged horizontally into the end zone. Before halftime, the Witches' unstoppable offense scored three more touchdowns, including two executed by Ingber. In the remainder of the game, Greenwich scored a touchdown in the third quarter and another in the fourth, while their steely defense kept the Woverines scoreless. This game was the Witches' third shutout of their four 2025 games to date, and in their fourth, they held their opponent to seven points. Coach Irion offered his observations about the Sept. 26 game. "(There's) not much to say," he said. "Basically, early injuries and an excessive number of turnovers kept killing our momentum. Plus, Greenwich is very good." Irion added that his athletes played "very hard" through the entire game. One of them was senior linebacker/running back Lucas French, who led the Wolverines' defense by executing six tackles, Irion noted. "We had virtually no offensive yardage," Irion added. "We will need to regroup." Next up for the Wolverines is a game against Hudson Falls (1-3) on Friday, Oct. 3 on Lake George's football field. On Oct. 10, the Wolverines compete away against Canajoharie-Fort Plain (2-2,) which has defeated the two teams that the Wolverines have beaten: Rensselaer-Loudonville Christian and Voorheesville. Both games start at 7 p.m.
