Garrow's 100th extra point headlines Peru's 35-7 win over PHS

PERU | Maggie Garrow unofficially became the 70th player — and just the third female — in state history to make 100 career extra points in Peru's 35-7 victory over Plattsburgh High on Saturday, Sept. 20. Garrow, now in her fourth season of kicking, reached the milestone after Chase Carpenter's 53-yard touchdown run on the first play from scrimmage of the second half. She joined Cambridge's Helen Mooney and Jamestown's Ella Propheter as the only other females to reach the mark. "I'm very thankful for all the boys on this team, and all the past three teams that have helped me get to this point, because without them it wouldn't have been possible," Garrow said. "A lot of practice goes into it. We've spent some time at practice over the years working on it. It's a connection between the holder and you, so I mean, it takes two of us to get it in. The snapper as well. "I really hope after I graduate some little girls at Peru see that they can do it and want to do it." Peru's Jake Frechette tossed four touchdown passes in the first half, highlighted by Isaiah Hendrix's one-handed grab on a 54-yard score. Trent Taylor added touchdown receptions of 19 and 8 yards, while Mason Starke opened the scoring by racing 13 yards to the end zone. Frechette completed 11 of 14 passes for 198 yards. Six different players earned a catch. Hendrix paced the attack with three catches for 75 yards, while Taylor added a team-high four receptions for 50 yards. "I got so much protection. I give that all to (the offensive line)," Frechette said. "I got so many targets. Playing man against us is definitely hard to do. The ball was dished out everywhere today. It's just hard to cover so many good athletes on our team." Plattsburgh High pulled within 21-7 with 2:57 left in the first half. Colden Johnson found Ryan Colburn for a quick strike, and Colburn broke a tackle and raced 70 yards for a touchdown. Cooper Holland booted the extra point. Johnson completed 8 of 14 throws for 139 yards and the score, and Colburn caught five passes for 119 yards. Josiah Wineglass led the Hornets on the ground with 34 yards. Peru's win, combined with Beekmantown's 51-20 victory, sets up a matchup of unbeatens between the longtime rivals at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 27, in Beekmantown.
