Fifth annual Fall Festival and Car Show returns to Schroon

SCHROON LAKE | If admiring vintage cars with a stunning Adirondack lake as the backdrop is your idea of a good time, or if you are looking for a classic fall-time celebration to enjoy with your family in a small town atmosphere, then head to Schroon Lake on Saturday, Oct. 18. The Schroon Lake Chamber of Commerce's popular "Fall for Schroon Festival and Car Show" is returning for year number five, and considering the event has grown each year since its inception, 2025 guarantees just as much, if not more, enjoyment for all. "Certainly, as a shoulder season even,t it brings something new to the area at a time where there is not a lot of other things going," noted Schroon Lake Chamber of Commerce's Executive Director Sue Palisano. "The car show certainly continues to be popular and again, it's the last car show in the area so for folks who want to get their car out it is a great opportunity. We have been blessed with beautiful weekends and the setting is gorgeous Schroon Lake." Beginning at 10 a.m., the entire area from Dock Street, Leland Ave, and the Town Park will be closed off, as will the town boat launch, and automobiles ranging from Model-Ts to model muscle cars will be on display. James Cawley from Ticonderoga will have his Batmobile there, and will also be bringing along his new Scooby Doo van, the "Mystery Machine." "We expect 1000 people," Palisano confidently predicted. "Last year we had 105 cars in the car show, which is pretty much our capacity, and we are on track to do that again this year, we already have 60 registered and we are still a month out." The Harvest Farmers Market will also be open in the Pavilion from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. At 11 a.m., the town park will officially open for the family fun portion of the day and run through 2:30 in the afternoon. A big and small bounce house will be present for energetic youngsters, as well as games, a climbing wall, and everyone's favorite clown, Penelope, will be working the crowd with her balloon animals and face painting. "Our famous pumpkin patch will be back again thanks to the Friends of the Schroon Lake Farmers Market," Palisano noted. "The Schroon Lake Central School senior class will once again be manning the dunk tank as a fundraiser and also having a bake sale. We have a variety of vendors this year, ROOST will be joining us, and of course, we will be bringing back all of the food trucks." Also returning this year will be Big Fezz and the Surmatics with live music. The event is entirely volunteer-operated, and the Chamber welcomes folks who would like to volunteer with open arms. Being completely internally funded, the Chamber does solicit donations from the car show; registration is free, but a donation at check-in helps support the event and keep it high quality. "We try to provide as much of this type of community entertainment free of charge so that we have a very wide, diverse demographic who can attend with little kids," Palisano said. "They don't have to worry about paying an entrance fee, that is something we have continued to be able to do and we are proud we can provide these events at no charge to families." The event was originally created thanks to town board member Rick Gero's interest in bringing a small car show to Schroon for a number of years. With the exception of the Adirondack Marathon, there was no post-Labor Day activity, and a wrap-around event to include both cars and a fall celebration made perfect sense. Thanks to a grant from the Adirondack Foundation's Generous Acts in 2023, the once homegrown kids carnival received a jump start and has been ramped up considerably as the years have gone on. "The fall festival has made remarkable strides in the past five years, we are certainly proud that we have grown," Palisano remarked. "When we started in 2021, we had 32 cars and a homegrown kids carnival in the park, it was a test balloon to see if doing an event at that point in October was going to be something that would be successful and obviously it was. The interest is there and we are excited about bringing the festival back again in 2025." Pre-registration is required for those interested in showcasing their automobiles at the car show and will run through Wednesday, Oct. 15.
