Moriah under a State of Emergency amid drought conditions

MORIAH | Due to a critical situation affecting the Moriah water reservoir, the town is now under a local State of Emergency, effective immediately. "As a result, and to preserve our remaining water supply, a mandatory water ban is now in effect for all residents and businesses. Obviously, the weather forecast isn't looking good for substantial rainfall. I will almost certainly be extending this ban every five days for the next month," Moriah Supervisor Matt Brassard said in a Tuesday morning notice. The ban is for all non-essential indoor and outdoor water use, including lawn watering, washing vehicles, filling swimming pools and hot tubs and all commercial water uses not essential for public health and safety. Permitted water usage includes for drinking, cooking and personal hygiene. Those caught in violation of the emergency water ban can face penalties according to town code, which can result in criminal charges. "This declaration and accompanying water use restrictions are necessary to protect the public health and safety of the Town of Moriah during this critical water shortage. The cooperation and understanding of all residents are essential to address this emergency effectively," officials said Sept. 16. The entire North Country is currently under an ongoing drought watch as Lake Champlain dips into near-record lows and several area towns urge minimal water use in the coming days with no forecasted rain anticipated.
