Tannery Pond welcomes back community day Outdoor Show

NORTH CREEK | Temperatures may be dropping in the Adirondacks — but not enthusiasm for the great outdoors. Outdoor activities from camping, to fishing, hunting and hiking will be celebrated on Sept. 20 at Tannery Pond Center's annual community day and outdoor show. The free 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. outdoor event in North Creek will feature live music, craft beer, food trucks, a chili cook-off, as well as vendor and information booths featuring potential vendors in taxidermy, fly fishing, rafting, Adirondack song birds, art programs for kids, and so much more. Outdoor life and beauty will be celebrated inside the community center, as well, with an exhibit of Drew Monthie's nature photography and talks on Peregrine falcons, trail cameras and exotic Adirondack creatures like the Canadian lynx. Foot-stomping music will flow all day, starting with Bob Stump and Doug Moody providing a mix of blues, Appalachian folk music, country jazz and rock, and finishing with The Barkeaters, a local band playing original tunes about life in the Adirondacks. "This is our third Outdoor Show, and it's very popular — it drew more than 1,000 people the last two years," said Candice Murray, executive director of Tannery Pond Center. "There's so much to do and see, it feels like an outdoor fair. And fall is a great time to be outdoors with friends and neighbors, which is why we call it "Community Day." For the hungry and thirsty, several food trucks will be on hand, including trucks operated by the Adirondack Pub and Brewery, the Johnsburg Youth Committee, Kiki's Tacos & Treats, and Bab-a-Dew's Pizza. But attendees will have another eating option: tasting and voting for the chili cookoff in the afternoon. All home and professional chefs have been invited to cook up their favorite chili recipes, and prizes donated by Braley and Noxon will be awarded based on the votes of the crowd. The speaker series will feature for life-long long resident and outdoorsman, Lou Berichelli, speaking at 12 p.m. on Using Trail Cameras to capture wildlife in the Adirondacks; state conservation officer Tim Delmer will follow, at 1:15 p.m., discussing the current status of Peregrine falcons as an endangered species in New York and how their nesting impacts cliff closures in the rock-climbing community. At 2:30 p.m., environmental educator and former zookeeper Bernadette Hoffman will introduce a live Canada Lynx, an Amazon Parrot, hedgehogs and chinchillas in a talk aimed at connecting kids and parents to wildlife through touching and learning. The Vistas and Visions: Nature in Focus photo exhibit by artist Drew Monthie will be on display in Tannery Pond's art gallery until Sept. 27. Monthie holds three degrees in the plant sciences, is retired from a career as a landscape consultant and has taught at SUNY Empire State as a professor in the natural sciences. Vendor and information booths will be operated by a wide variety of outdoor groups, including but not limited to, the Adirondack Center for Loon Conservation, Adirondack 46ers, Adirondack Song Birds, Big Yellow House Designs, and Hornbeck Boats.
