Peru's ground game too much for Ti in CVAC opener

PERU | Peru's high-octane offense was on full display Friday, Sept. 12, at the Apple Bowl. The Nighthawks (2-0, 1-0 CVAC) scored seven touchdowns — six on offense and one on special teams — while rushing for 246 yards in a 52-6 Champlain Valley Athletic Conference victory over Ticonderoga. Peru wasted no time asserting control, scoring three touchdowns in the opening quarter. Brody Blaise-Smith punched in a 2-yard run, Chase Carpenter returned a punt 50 yards for a touchdown and Jake Frechette connected with Blake Porter for a 13-yard score. Ticonderoga's lone response came on an 84-yard kickoff return by Trevor Blanchard, but Peru countered with 31 unanswered points. Maggie Garrow added a 28-yard field goal, and early in the second quarter, Wyatt Bridges sprinted 65 yards for a touchdown. In the second half, Blaise-Smith added another on a 21-yard run, and Caleb Starke and Cole Silver earned rushing touchdowns in the fourth quarter. Frechette finished 5 of 11 for 123 yards and a TD. The first play from scrimmage was a 50-yard strike from Frechette to Trent Taylor. "The athletes that we have on this team are outrageous," Frechette said. "The line today was phenomenal. Our running was … it was great. It didn't matter who was running the ball because the holes were so big that, you know, it was 10 yards a pop, and then they'd break it for a touchdown. It was a great win today." The Sentinels (0-2, 0-1 CVAC) are returning from eight-man football this season. They were playing their first conference game since Oct. 21, 2022. Ticonderoga struggled to move the ball, gaining just 51 yards and failing to complete a pass. The Sentinels were without quarterback Jackson Dorsett from their third offensive series. Skyler Frasier relieved Dorsett under center. "They're working really hard," Peru head coach Ryon O'Connell said. "Transitioning from eight-man to 11-man football is definitely challenging.
