Bolton-Wbg. girls prevail in first four games of 2025

BOLTON | Mirroring their early-season 2024 success, the Bolton-Warrensburg Girls Soccer Team won their first four games of the 2025 season. Sept. 6, coach Scott Smith said he was particularly pleased with his team's ability to employ different strategies — and various aspects of their collective talent— in achieving the victories. "So far, we've had eight different scorers, and our team has found different ways to win games," he said. "It's been great." On Sept. 5, the B-W girls were behind 2-1 for most of regulation time in a game versus Galway, but achieved an overtime 3-2 win following a late-game goal. Senior Caitlin O'Donnell scored on a direct kick off the far post above the Galway goalie with merely 2:39 left in regulation play to force the overtime, and freshman Olivia Bennett kicked the tie-breaker 1:16 into overtime for the victory. Bennett's goal was scored after senior Sophia Fiorentino dribbled the ball up the right sideline to freshman Maelyn Hubert, who passed the ball to Bennett. The first goal in the game was scored by senior Avah Fiorentino, aided by an assist from Hubert. Smith praised his defenders' work in the second period, as they had contained the offense of Galway's Brielle Cameron, who scored her team's two goals in the first period. B-W sophomore goaltender Ella Hens achieved seven saves while Galway's goalie tallied six. "With just a few minutes to go (in regulation), Galway was on their way to beating us and our backs were against the wall, but we found a way to win," coach Smith said. "It was pretty special." BOLTON-WBG. 6, HOOSIC VALLEY 1 On Sept. 3, the B-W girls defeated Hoosic Valley 6-1 with senior Hailey Goodspeed scoring three goals and a trio of her teammates scoring the remainder. Eleven minutes into the game, Goodspeed scored first off an assist by senior Maille Kelley, and Hoosic Valley answered 17 minutes later to tie the score, but Goodspeed struck again 30 seconds before halftime with her second goal of the game. In the second half, O'Donnell, Bennett, Kelley and Goodspeed all scored, boosting the winning margin. Providing assists were Kelley, Hubert, and senior Halley LaBrecque. Hens had four saves for the B-W squad, while the Hoosic goalie tallied 12. B-W 1, WHITEHALL 0 On Aug. 30, the Bolton-Warrensburg girls won their first annual Kickoff Classic tournament by defeating Whitehall in the finals game. Bennett scored the sole goal about 14 minutes into the game. "After Olivia's goal, it was a back-and-forth battle that had the intensity of a postseason game," Smith said. Hens recorded six saves while the Whitehall goalie had five. In the consolation game, Johnsburg-Minerva/North Warren defeated Saratoga Catholic, 2-1 in overtime to place third in the tourney. Maille Kelley was awarded MVP of the tournament, while B-W's Olivia Bennett and Lucia Williams of Johnsburg-Minerva/North Warren were named All-Tournament players. BOLTON-WBG. 6, SPA CATHOLIC 0 On Aug. 28, in the semifinals of their Kickoff Classic tournament, Bolton-Warrensburg defeated Saratoga Catholic 6-0 with Bennett scoring three of the goals and providing an assist on another. Hubert, Goodspeed, and sophomore Maddy Andersen each scored one goal. On half of the B-W goals, Kelley provided the assists. Smith said he was impressed that five of the game's six goals were scored by either jayvee draftees or newcomers to the team.
