The Women's Center to host first annual fundraiser walk

TICONDEROGA | The Women's Center is rolling out its first annual Steps for Hope Walk Fundraiser on Saturday, Oct. 4, and members of the community of all ages are invited to lace their sneakers up in support of the center's mission. "At our Vermont location, we have been doing this for years," shared Katrina Cook, NY Center Manager. "We wanted to do something similar in Ti, to have an event that is open to the community and also to our already established supporters. This will be a family-friendly outdoor activity and an ideal time to gather and show support of our center." The Women's Center began in 1986 as the response of a faith-based organization wanting to provide alternatives to abortion and to offer support for women facing an unexpected pregnancy. The center provides an array of free services including counseling, pregnancy wellness and childbirth education, parenting education. They also offer free pregnancy testing, confirmation via ultrasound at the Middlebury location, pregnancy/parenting classes, a fatherhood program, material assistance, and more. Anyone can take advantage, with all services are free thanks to the center being 100 percent funded by donations.The center has had a presence in Ticonderoga for three and a half years, and officially opened the doors to its Montcalm Street headquarters in November of 2023. "We have been getting good feedback," Cook said. "We have been able to serve and really help those who come to us with those challenges and those needs. "We give hope and support through what we offer." The center also has a boutique located within the basement level of St. Mary's Catholic Church at 22 Father Jocques Place. Onesies, outfits for both boys and girls of varying sizes, strollers, infant accessories, and more are available for free to parents to take advantage of, a gesture that offers both material and emotional support. "The boutique is doing phenomenal, our fill-a-bag events have been so successful and we have given away 1200 items this year alone," Cook said. "Donations are coming in super strong, and we are able to really turn around and give that back. Participating in the walk will help us continue to operate and service those in our community." Registration for the walk will begin at 9 a.m. at St. Mary's with a 9:30 start time. The walking route will cover the La Chute Trail off of Lake George Avenue. The walk will be held rain or shine, and following its completion, an assortment of complimentary juices, muffins, donuts and fruit will be available to replenish participants' bellies, and different prizes donated by local businesses will also be distributed. "Our financial goal for the walk is $2,000," Cook said. "All of that will go towards helping the center operate. Registration for the event is free, but you can give a gift when you register, or get your own fundraising page to sponsor you as a walker." Huddy and Co. has created shirts for participants to wear for the event, which may be purchased separately at https://www.huddyco.com/. The Women's Center will receive a portion of the proceeds from shirt sales. "Our organization is really here to serve men, women, and families," noted Cook.
