Plattsburgh State to induct seven into Hall of Fame

PLATTSBURGH | The Plattsburgh State Department of Intercollegiate Athletics and Recreation, in conjunction with the Office of Alumni Relations, has announced the Plattsburgh State Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2025. The 40th induction class includes Earl Burnell '65 (baseball, soccer, track and field, wrestling), Allison Era '14 (women's ice hockey), Chris Fess '94 (men's ice hockey), Dan Schaly '93 (men's ice hockey), Geoff Spear '85 (posthumous inductee, assistant men's and women's soccer coach), Timothy Stanley '07 (soccer) and Amy Woo '10 (softball). The annual induction ceremony and dinner will be held Friday, Sept. 26, at 6 p.m. in the Warren Ballroom at the Angell College Center on the SUNY Plattsburgh campus. Tickets are $30 per person and $15 for children under 12. Interested attendees should register by Sept. 18 at http://alumni.plattsburgh.edu/HallofFame. Earl Burnell joined the Plattsburgh State men's soccer program in 1963 despite never having played the sport before. After one season, he became one of the team's top players, earning First-Team All-State and NSCAA Second-Team All-Region honors in 1964. Burnell also competed successfully in track and field and baseball, setting a school long jump record in 1964 that stood for years and recording three pitching wins. Allison Era was a standout defender for the women's ice hockey team, helping Plattsburgh State win a national title in 2013-14 and back-to-back ECAC West championships in 2012-13 and 2013-14. She was named to the NCAA Division III All-Tournament Team, the ECAC West All-Tournament Team, and First-Team All-ECAC West, and finished the season as an AHCA Second-Team All-American. Era also earned D3hockey.com First-Team All-America and First-Team All-USCHO honors, ranking second in program history among defenders with 91 points. Chris Fess was a member of the 1992 NCAA Division III national championship men's ice hockey team. He was a two-time All-SUNYAC honoree and named to the SUNYAC All-Tournament Team. Fess is tied for second all-time in program history in game-winning goals (14), tied for fifth in power-play goals (30) and ranks eighth in career goals (87). He also holds the single-season program record for shorthanded goals with eight. Dan Schaly starred as a forward for three seasons, helping the men's hockey program capture the 1992 NCAA Division III national championship. He was a three-time All-SUNYAC honoree, including two first-team selections, and was named SUNYAC Player of the Year in 1991-92. Schaly finished his career with 80 goals and 161 points, ranking 11th and 16th in program history. Geoff Spear spent 29 years as an assistant coach for the men's soccer program, helping Plattsburgh State win seven SUNYAC championships and qualify for the NCAA Division III Tournament nine times. He also coached the women's soccer team for seven seasons, assisting with five SUNYAC Tournament appearances. Spear, a fixture on the Cardinal sidelines for four decades, is being inducted posthumously. Tim Stanley was a three-time All-Region and All-SUNYAC honoree, earning First-Team All-Region and First-Team All-SUNYAC in 2004 and First-Team All-SUNYAC in 2005. He helped Plattsburgh State win a SUNYAC championship and reach the NCAA Division III semifinals in 2005, the program's best postseason finish. Stanley finished his career with 93 points, including 38 goals and 17 assists, and was named an NSCAA Second-Team All-American. Amy Woo led the softball team to an NCAA Regional Championship and the program's first College World Series appearance in 2007, earning All-Tournament honors. She was a Third-Team All-American in 2008 and received multiple All-Region, All-SUNYAC, and All-ECAC Upstate honors. Woo ranks second all-time in program history for runs (124), hits (185), and home runs (18). She also excelled academically, earning SUNY Chancellor's Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 2008 and CoSIDA Academic All-District recognition in 2008, 2009, and 2010.
