Ronald James Olcott

TICONDEROGA | Ronald James Olcott, 88, of Ticonderoga peacefully went to be with the Lord at his home on Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2025, surrounded by many loving family members. Born in Ticonderoga, N.Y., Sept. 2, 1936, he is the son of the late Wilbur R. and Beulah M. (Crossman) Olcott. Ron was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, having served during the Korean War. During his service, he was awarded both the National Defense Medal and Good Conduct Medal. Ron was a lifetime resident of Ticonderoga. He was employed by International Paper Company of Ticonderoga for 38 years, where he worked in the Outdoor Miscellaneous Department until his retirement in 1995. He was a communicant of St. Mary's Catholic Church and a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus, both of Ticonderoga. Ron was an avid sports fan, hunter and fisherman. He enjoyed going shopping, bingo, concerts, and trips to the Turning Stone, Foxwoods and Saratoga casinos. He also enjoyed watching horseracing and playing card games with his family, especially pinochle and poker. He loved gardening, barbecues, camping and anything to do with the outdoors and being with his family. Ron's greatest enjoyment and accomplishment was being a beloved husband, father, Papa and G-Pop. Many also knew Ron as R.J. Everyone knew when he was around by his contagious smile, laughter and witty jokes. He always wore his hat, had a cigar, whistling and singing and putting a smile on everyone's face. He created a beautiful song about three roses for his loving wife. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 63 years, Doris M. (Webster) Olcott, on Aug. 31, 2022. He was also predeceased by two brothers, Donald Olcott and Raymond Olcott; one great-grandchild, Drew Woods; and his beloved dog, G.G. Survivors include two sons, Timothy Olcott (Leigh) and Terry Olcott (Margaret); two daughters, Susan Woods (Randie) and Sharon Olcott-Dorsett; eight grandchildren, Ashley Olcott, Cody Olcott, Melynda Swinton, Kristine Larmore, Daniel Woods, Taylor Denton, Kallie Dorsett and Em-Jae Dorsett; 12 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; one brother, Kenneth Olcott (Jan); and sister-in-law, Nancy Olcott; and many nieces and nephews. A graveside service with military honors will take place on Saturday, Aug. 30, 2025, at 11 a.m. at the family plot of St. Mary's Parish Cemetery of Ticonderoga. The Rev. Medenel Angrand, pastor of St. Mary's Catholic Church, will officiate. A Celebration of Life will follow at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Ticonderoga.
