Fishbrook Pond lean-to destroyed by fire

LAKE GEORGE | The Fishbrook Pond North Lean-to in the Lake George Wild Forest has burned down as dry conditions continue across the Adirondacks. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation issued a notice Saturday, Aug. 16 after a fire destroyed the popular camping site. Officials said the entire site is temporarily closed to camping and campfires. Once it reopens, the notice will be removed from https://dec.ny.gov/places/lake-george-wild-forest. DEC officials said everyone – near or far – plays a role in preventing wildfires as human activity is the cause of most wildfires and it only takes a spark to spread quickly. Campers across the region are encouraged to follow these safety tips: -Check the fire danger map to make sure it's safe to have a fire where you are: https://dec.ny.gov/environmenta.../wildfires/fire-danger-map. -Avoid burning on windy days. -Use existing campfire rings and keep fires less than 3' high and 4' wide. -Build campfires away from overhanging branches, steep slopes, rotten stumps, logs, dry grass and leaves. -Only use charcoal or untreated wood as fuel. A good bed of coals or a small fire surrounded by rocks gives plenty of heat. -Scrape away litter, duff, and any burnable material within a 10-foot diameter circle. -Be sure your match is out. Hold it until it is cold. -Never leave a campfire unattended and always keep water and hand tools nearby. -When you're done, make campfire soup! Drown it, stir it, and repeat.
