Moriah Labor Day planning underway

PORT HENRY | Another summer in the North Country is coming to a close. As seasonal visitors prepare to head back to their native homelands, and residents schedule their pool closings and boat winterizations, the Town of Moriah is gearing up to bid the warm months goodbye and welcome in autumn and winter with their annual three-day Labor Day Celebration. "This event is all about making people happy and ensuring everyone who attends has a good time," said Jim Curran, event organizer. "It will be bigger and better than ever. We would love to see people show up and support our local community." This year's festivities will kick off on Friday, Aug. 29 and run through Sunday, Aug. 31. On Friday at the Farmers' Market at Bridgeview Harbour Marina from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., the Barenaked Bears will provide musical entertainment to attendees. Food trucks and vendors will be on site, allowing for families to make an evening of the market. "We have so many different festivities going on this year and the weekend is a great opportunity to celebrate the people who do so much hard work in our town," said Lauren Kimball, Office Coordinator at the Moriah Chamber of Commerce. "It's a perfect time to recognize these individuals, and also celebrate everything we have done throughout the year. We have had a lot of fun through our events and it is all because of the people who show up and help out and make these things possible." Saturday the entire town is invited to take advantage of the visitors and foot traffic. Bright and early at 9 a.m. the End of Summer Town Wide Yard Sale begins, offering treasures and new-to-you finds up and down neighborhood streets. At 8 p.m. the Parade of Lights on Lake Champlain will illuminate the waterfront, offering a magical experience for viewers. The firework display at 9 p.m. will close out the day, but the party will really be just beginning, as Sunday will see the lion's shares of activities and events. "Sunday is super packed," noted Kimball. "We are once again having the Labor Day Dash, and people are excited because we changed the route." This year the 5K dash will extend all downhill, beginning at Moriah Central School and ending at Bridgeview Harbour Marina. Registration is at 8:30 a.m. with a 9:30 a.m. start time. The Kids' Dash will follow at 10:30 a.m. At 2 p.m. the Labor Day Parade will commence. Like last year, there will be a Float Competition, the group with the "Best Float in the Show" winning a five foot tall trophy. "The Grand Marshal of this year's parade is yet to be determined," Curran teased. Following the parade's conclusion, Port Henry Field will be the next go-to location. At 3 p.m. the Labor Day Market will start, with vendors of all kinds available. Vendor signup will extend up until the day of the event, with a $25 fee. "The market used to be on Main Street, moving it to the field will allow for more folks and more space, which will make it nice," Curran said. "We will have pizza, hamburgers, and hot dogs. There will be 20 vendors, we will have dunking machines, jumping tents, Penelope the Clown will be there. It's going to be busy." Also at the field from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. there will be a chicken BBQ featuring Blues Without Borders, with all proceeds going to the Moriah Chamber of Commerce to help offset the cost of the event. "We haven't done the barbecue in a long time," Curran said. "That is expected to be big this year." Tickets for the dinner are $13 each. At the same time on Church Street, the Miner's Car Show will be happening, offering automobile aficionados looks at classic and rare vintage cars until 5 p.m. "We are still accepting vendors and parade participants, and also volunteers," Kimball said. "We have a link on our Facebook, or people can reach out through the Chamber's website. We are looking for people to help out in various areas, if there is a particular event they would like to help out with we would love to have them." Vendor, parade, and dash registration are all available at moriahchamber.org. The next event for the Town of Moriah will be Trunk or Treat on Oct. 23.
