Pecore dominates Sportsman Modified field at Airborne

PLATTSBURGH | Shane Pecore is no stranger to victory lane. The Cornwall, Ontario, driver has won a dozen DIRTcar Sportsman Series events and claimed the prestigious DIRTcar Sportsman Great Lakes 75 at Super DIRT Week 53 in 2018. He collected three wins in a row in early July at different tracks. On Saturday, Aug. 9, Pecore added another to his resume, leading all 50 laps for a flag-to-flag win on Liquor and Wine Warehouse Make-A-Wish Night at Airborne Park Speedway. The fate of the 24-car field was essentially decided at the redraw, where Pecore drew the No. 1 cone and the pole position. The 2016 DIRTcar Series champion, who has worn the North Region crown four times, jumped ahead from the drop of the green flag and was never challenged. Behind him, Nick Heywood, Fire Swamp and Travis Bruno battled for second. Swamp charged from the 11th starting spot to join the fray, slipping underneath Heywood late for the runner-up finish. Bruno and Michael Wright rounded out the top five. Matt Tanner also delivered a dominant performance, driving from fifth to win the 25-lap McGee Automotive Family Sprint Cars of New England feature. Tanner, now the SCoNE points leader, passed Tyler Chartrand for the lead on lap 10 and held off late pressure to secure his second win of the season and 13th of his SCoNE career. Chartrand finished second, followed by Floyd Billington, Kadyn Berry and Nick Krueger. In the Pro Stocks, hometown driver Zack Daniels held off a late charge from Marc Lalonde to claim his second straight win at "The Big A." Daniels took the lead from Bruno Cyr on a lap-four restart and kept it to the finish. Lalonde finished second, with Jocelyn Roy, Bastien Caron and Dany Voghel completing the top five. The Ninth State Cannabis Renegades featured a brief sibling rivalry between Nathan and Roland Guay before Shawn Duquette grabbed the lead on a lap four restart. Brad Bushey took over on lap 15, but Duquette reclaimed the top spot three laps later and held off Tylor Terry for the win. David Johnson earned an emotional first career victory in the Limited Sportsman feature, passing Gary English for the lead on lap 14. A late caution set up a green-white-checkered finish, but Johnson held on, with Parker Dermody finishing third. In the 500cc Mini Sprints, Scott Bachand notched his third win of the season, overtaking Gage Provencher in the closing laps. Provencher finished second, followed by Destin St. Clair. Defending champion Ryan Senecal stole the Mini Stock win from JP Corrow on the final lap. Corrow settled for second, and Speedy Bresette charged from 15th to third. The night ended with the Enduro, where Trevor Jaques took advantage of late mechanical trouble for Ritchie Turner to grab the win. Randy Martin finished second, followed by Corrow, Jamie Whitney Jr. and Josh LaPorte. Airborne returns Thursday, Aug. 14, with $1,000 to win for the Mini Stocks and kids' race car rides. The DIRTcar 358-Modifieds, Sportsman Modifieds, Renegades and Limited Sportsman will also compete. Racing begins at 7 p.m. Grandstand admission is $15; kids under 12 are free.
