Center for Loon Conservation holds 2nd Loon Lakeside BBQ fundraiser

SARANAC LAKE | The Adirondack Center for Loon Conservation (ACLC) is holding its second Annual Loon Lakeside Barbecue on Saturday, Aug. 23, at Paul Smith's College. A limited entry reception will be held at the historic St. Gabriel's Church at 2:30 p.m. and the main event will follow on the Great Lawn on the Paul Smith's campus at 4:30 p.m. Tickets are on sale on their website. The event will honor the Hornbeck family, whose legacy is deeply intertwined with the Adirondacks through the exquisite craftsmanship of their iconic boats, as well as their roles in conservation, community engagement, and philanthropy. Sadly, Ann Hornbeck, co-founder of Hornbeck Boats, passed away unexpectedly on July 31. Her family members will attend in her honor. "We were heartbroken to learn of Ann's passing," said Dorothy Waldt, executive director of ACLC, "but we are so grateful that her family will be present to be honored for their deep commitment to conservation in the Adirondacks. "This event is our way of celebrating the work we do alongside our community. By attending this event, you know you are supporting our ongoing work to ensure that loons can thrive in the Adirondacks for future generations." Once decommissioned, St. Gabriel's Church was recently acquired by Paul Smith's College through the Cloudsplitter Foundation. Leaders and chefs from the new Adventure Hospitality and Food Institute will offer a sensory introduction to their evolving culinary program through a short cooking demonstration using ingredients foraged and grown close to Apollos Smith's former mountain home. Professor Brett McLeod will share the history of the structure and landscape and illuminate its significance to Paul Smith's College today. The main event on the Great Lawn at Paul Smith's College will treat guests to spectacular views of Lower St. Regis Lake, where one of the first banded loons in the Adirondacks still spends its time, and delicious local barbecue catered by Porkbusters of Tupper Lake. The afternoon will feature music from Sara Milonovich and Greg Anderson as well as a live auction. Offerings this year include multiple excursion packages in the Tri-Lakes area, as well as a hand-built guide boat and other great items. "Our partnership with the Adirondack Center for Loon Conservation reflects the very best of what it means to be part of the Adirondacks," said Kathy Bonavist, executive vice president for Advancement and Enrollment at Paul Smith's College. "Each morning, as I hear the call of loons echoing across Lower St. Regis Lake, I'm reminded of the deep responsibility we share to protect this extraordinary place. Collaborations like this strengthen our collective impact and celebrate the natural legacy we're all working to preserve." Waldt hopes that guests at this year's event are equally excited by the partnership with Paul Smith's College. "It has been an honor to lead this incredible organization as we elevate our investment into scientific inquiry that teaches us not only about the health of the iconic species we love, but also how to protect our shared environment for generations to come," said Waldt.
