Clinton County's title hopes dashed in state semifinals

ROCHESTER | The Clinton County Mariners' bid for their first American Legion state baseball championship in more than half a century came to an end Tuesday with a 10-6 loss to Hamburg Post 527 at Rochester Institute of Technology. Clinton County, which entered the day as one of four teams remaining in the eight-team, double-elimination state tournament, saw a 2-0 first-inning lead erased by a steady Hamburg offense that pulled away in the middle innings. The Mariners closed their season with a 39-3 record. Hamburg, from the Buffalo area, scored in four consecutive innings and capitalized on three Clinton County errors. Post 527 out-hit the Mariners 12-9 and pulled ahead with a four-run fifth that extended its lead to 10-4. Scott LaMountain (AuSable Valley/King University) led Clinton County at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two doubles, a run scored and two RBIs. He delivered a two-run double in the top of the first after singles by Warren Miller (Plattsburgh High/SUNY Cortland) and Donnie Mitchell (Peru). Mitchell finished 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run, while Miller went 1-for-3 with a hit-by-pitch and two runs scored. Jordan Perry (Franklin Academy/St. John Fisher) added a double, sacrifice fly and RBI, and Nate Baker (Plattsburgh High) tripled and scored in the fourth inning. Hamburg responded with three runs in the bottom of the second and two more in the third, including two runs scored on wild pitches and defensive miscues. The Mariners pulled within 5-4 in the top of the fourth, but Hamburg quickly answered with one run in the fourth and four in the fifth to take control. Clinton County scored twice in the seventh on a Landen Duprey (Peru/Le Moyne College) RBI single and Perry's sacrifice fly, but Hamburg pitcher Chase Porter went the distance. Porter struck out eight over seven innings, allowing nine hits and six runs (five earned). On the mound, Dan Hartmann (Plattsburgh High) started for the Mariners and allowed five earned runs over 2.2 innings, striking out six. Cedar Rivers (Saranac Lake) followed with two innings of relief, surrendering five unearned runs, and Seth Petrashune (Saranac) tossed a clean final 1.1 innings. Gabe Moore (Peru) doubled in the second inning for Clinton County, while Petrashune reached base twice.
