Six to be inducted into Clinton County Mariners Hall of Fame

PLATTSBURGH | Six former Clinton County American Legion baseball standouts — Joe Landry, Roger Barnard, Roy Ebersole, Scott Mitchell, Donny Coolidge and David Waldron — will be inducted into the Clinton County Mariners Hall of Fame on Sunday, Aug. 4, at the West Plattsburgh American Legion. The ceremony is scheduled for 6 p.m. Donations will be accepted. Joe LandryLandry played high school baseball at Mount Assumption Institute from 1974 to 1976 and was a two-year member of Post 1619. He went on to play Division I baseball at the University of South Carolina from 1977 to 1980. The Gamecocks were NCAA national runners-up in 1977, falling 2-1 to Arizona State, and returned to the NCAA Tournament in 1980. Roger BarnardBarnard starred at Saranac Central and played for the 1973 Post 20 team. He later played baseball while serving in the U.S. Navy. He was a longtime standout in the Champlain Valley Baseball League (CVBL), suiting up for the Plattsburgh Merchants and the McGee/Midas/CR Tunes Mudhens. He also served as CVBL commissioner and was inducted into the National Semi-Pro Baseball Hall of Fame in 2024. Roy EbersoleEbersole played high school baseball at Peru Central and Plattsburgh High School. He spent two seasons with Post 20 (1984–85), earning co-Most Valuable Player honors in 1985 after batting .400 with 32 runs, 38 RBIs and 10 home runs. The team won the District IV championship that year. He went on to play basketball at Clinton Community College and was also inducted into the National Semi-Pro Baseball Hall of Fame in 2024. Scott MitchellMitchell played at Peru Central from 1989 to 1990, helping the team win a Section VII Class B title. He was a two-year member of Post 20 (1990–91), with both teams winning District IV championships. In 1990, he set a program record with 32 stolen bases and scored 29 runs. He was named Defensive Player of the Year that season. Mitchell played two seasons at Clinton Community College and later coached varsity baseball at Northeastern Clinton. Donny CoolidgeCoolidge played at Plattsburgh High and spent three seasons (2002–04) with the Clinton County Mariners, helping them to District IV titles in 2003 and 2004. He earned the Mariners Award in 2002. In 2003, he batted .483 with 57 hits, 44 runs scored and 42 RBIs. In 2004, he batted .348 with 49 hits, 40 runs, 31 RBIs, nine doubles and six home runs. Coolidge played four seasons at Plattsburgh State (2005, 2008, 2010–11), earning All-SUNYAC honors in 2010. David WaldronWaldron, a Saranac Central product, played three seasons with the Mariners (2000–02), winning District IV championships in 2000 and 2001. He received the Mariners Award in 2001. That season, he batted .387 (43-for-111) with 30 runs, 30 RBIs and 10 doubles. In 2002, he batted .382 (42-for-110) with 37 runs and eight doubles. Waldron played four years at Plattsburgh State (2003–06), earning All-SUNYAC honors in 2003, 2005 and 2006, and All-Region honors in 2003. He was inducted into the National Semi-Pro Baseball Hall of Fame in 2024.
