BHSN to host CIT training

PLATTSBURGH | Behavioral Health Services North's (BHSN) Mobile Crisis Team and SUNY Plattsburgh police officers will offer New York State Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) training from July 28 through Aug. 1 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. within the Angell College Center at SUNY Plattsburgh. Officers will undergo a rigorous, five-day training with a focus on mental-health awareness; active listening and a trauma-informed approach; non-violent de-escalation tactics; scenario-based role play; and simulated interactions. "Our partnerships with Behavioral Health Services North and other area mental health care providers represent the best practice for providing the best possible response to individuals experiencing a mental health crisis. Through ongoing communication, joint training, and coordinated response efforts, we've built a strong relationship that enhances outcomes for those in need," said SUNY Plattsburgh Chief of Police Patrick Rascoe, This collaboration and education ensure that our officers are supported to respond with compassion, professionalism, and the right resources to those who need help, ultimately benefiting the communities we serve." A similar training was held in April of this year with the Saranac Lake Police Department, during which 19 participants completed the program. The training focuses on de-escalation techniques and connecting individuals in crisis with available resources, ensuring a safe and supportive environment for all parties involved. The class is attended by law enforcement and mental health providers from around the region, highlighting the importance of interagency collaboration in addressing the complex needs of individuals in crisis. "Throughout this training, officers will increase their knowledge, skills, and confidence related to interactions with individuals in emotional distress," said BHSN Crisis Services Associate Director Tyler Condlin. "The training builds the groundwork for officers to feel comfortable in some of the most chaotic and unpredictable situations, creating a safer and more mutually beneficial interaction and outcome for both the officers and persons in distress." By providing a platform for professionals from diverse backgrounds to come together and learn from one another, the CIT Training aims to foster a deeper understanding of the complexities of mental health crises and the importance of a coordinated response.
