June border numbers show slight improvement

PLATTSBURGH | The North Country Chamber of Commerce has released June border crossing numbers for Champlain from U.S. Customs and Border Protection. "Border crossing numbers for June at the Champlain Port of Entry show car numbers down 26 percent compared with June 2024. That's 70,490 in 2025 vs. 95,594 a year earlier," reports Garry Douglas, Chamber President. "This represents a slight improvement from the 30-31 percent range in May but still a substantial downturn being felt by our area hospitality and retail businesses. The slight uptick likely represents the start of summer and the St-Jean Baptiste holiday. Active outreach continues in many forms, in part laying important groundwork for the future. And it remains important to extend heightened hospitality to the Canadians continuing to visit." Commercial crossings remained strong and basically unchanged with 21,750 trucks in June 2025 compared with 21,889 a year earlier. "We know that part of this activity was further stockpiling of imported components and raw materials ahead of potentially new or higher tariffs," Douglas speculates. "We continue to be an active messenger bi-nationally on the North Country impacts of actual and threatened tariffs on Canada and the very real and unprecedented damage being done to our special people-to-people relationship with our friends and allies. We fervently hope for a U.S.-Canada trade agreement soon, after which we must all work toward eventual healing. Supporters of tariffs hopefully also value the special connection between our two peoples and will join in this process."
