Chazy Lions ready for Old Home Day July 27

CHAZY | Chazy Lions Club is ready for their Old Home Day summer celebration. The parade starts at 12 p.m. (noon) and moves through the village to the Chazy Recreation Park. Pilon's Transport & Towing Car Show is back with a field of vintage beauty. And the Lions' barbecue with chicken, beef, burgers, sausage and hotdogs (and michigans) is sure to feed a crowd. Priscilla and Rick Laurin are co-organizers with the Chazy Lions. "The parade is going to start at noon on the Duprey Road by the orchard, then go through town, down by the fire station on North Farm Road to the Rec Park," Mr. Laurin said. "Next year we are going to start the parade at 11 a.m." A good time for old friends and neighbors to get together, Mr. Laurin said, they will have plenty of food and fun for everyone, live music with two bands and local crafts tables to fill the afternoon hours, July 27. Performers this year feature Austin & the In-Laws, the region's popular post-outlaw country music band, and Hang Tight. "It's an event we do to give back every year," Mr. Laurin said. "The chicken and beef barbecue starts at noon for $15 a meal. We have a hot dog, hamburger booth, too." The Lions Club takes on the lion's share of prep and presentation. "We barbecue right there and we also barbecue about 100 pounds of beef." SUMMER TRADITIONS Old Home Day is a summer tradition and the Rec Park, 434 North Farm Rd., has plenty of room to park and play. "For years, this event had a car show and Pilon's Transport & Towing brought it back last year. It had a lot of entries. Pilon's is sponsoring the car show again," Mr. Laurin said. In addition to car show prizes, Pilon's added trophies for parade categories: Best Fire Department Presentation, Best Float, Best Business Presentation and Best Classic Vehicle, with judging by town representatives. "Pilon's is helping us set up the parade. The Lions are at the Rec Park by noon. There will be games for kids and a bounce house. Alice T. Miner Museum sets up a kid's game area, we have a dunking booth," Mr. Laurin said. Mrs. Laurin said they will announce the Old Home Day 2025 king and queen at 2 p.m. "We also recognize the oldest and the youngest people there. It's an event for the Lions Club to give back, we host it each year to support Chazy. Sometimes Chazy class reunions are held at the same time," she said. NOON START JULY 27 Vendors get set up before noon along with area civic organizations: Lions will have a table, the Chazy Free Library and Chazy Volunteer Fire Department will also have members on hand for people who want to find out ways to help, join and support community. Chazy Lions actively support Chazy year-round, presenting scholarships to local students and winter fun for youth. Four scholarships were given to graduating seniors this year, three from Chazy Central Rural and one from Northern Adirondack Central. "We think education for youth is important," Mr. Laurin said. "Old Home Day is one of our biggest activities. Another is Turkey Night in November, when the Lions Club buys 70-plus turkeys and people buy a ticket for $1. We have drawings, usually in three or four rounds, and winners also receive other prizes, food and gift certificates." Lions Club also sponsors Winter Weekend in February during school break, with many activities, usually including a bonfire and hot chocolate. The club recently donated $1,000 to help the Chazy Public Library rebuild their children's book collection after a fire damaged their building last year. "And there's always a volleyball tournament," Mr. Laurin said. Chazy Lions will have membership applications at Old Home Day, with club volunteers on hand to talk to. "People can go to our Facebook page and contact myself or Priscilla or John Saxe to find out more about what we do. It is always about helping the community," Mr. Laurin said. Newly established as a non-profit foundation, donations to the Chazy Lions Club are tax-deductible. With 2025 ready to roll, the Lions have eyes on a big day in the works for 2026. "Next year is the 250th celebration of founding the United States. It is the 100th birthday of the Alice T. Miner Museum. And it's the 70th anniversary of our Lions Club.
