Men's hockey schedule spotlights new conference opponents, big games

PLATTSBURGH | The Plattsburgh State men's hockey team looks to reach its fourth straight SUNYAC championship game in pursuit of its 25th State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) title in program history. The team will play a 25-game regular-season schedule in 2025-26, the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics and Recreation announced Monday. Led by sixth-year head coach Steve Moffat, the Cardinals went 16-11-1 (8-6-0 SUNYAC) in 2024-25, reaching the SUNYAC championship game after scoring a dramatic game-tying goal with four seconds left in regulation, then netting an overtime winner against top-seeded Cortland in the semifinals. Plattsburgh State prepares for the regular season with two exhibition games, first hosting Vermont State University Castleton on Saturday, Oct. 18, followed by a trip to Potsdam on Saturday, Oct. 25. The team opens the regular season with back-to-back home games against VTSU-Castleton and Plymouth State on Friday, Oct. 31, and Saturday, Nov. 1, respectively. SUNYAC play begins on the road when the Cardinals visit Oswego State on Friday, Nov. 14, to open conference action against longtime rivals in a SUNYAC championship rematch. The following day, Plattsburgh State travels to new conference member Hobart, which has won three consecutive national championships, for a 4 p.m. game on Saturday, Nov. 15. The Cardinals then welcome Morrisville to the Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena for their conference home opener Friday, Nov. 21, at 7 p.m., followed by a game against Cortland on Saturday, Nov. 22. The Cardinals close out the 2025 portion of their schedule on the road, beginning at host Norwich for the LayerEight Shootout. They face Middlebury on Friday, Nov. 28, then will play either Norwich or Stevenson the following day. Plattsburgh State has a light December schedule, playing only two road games against Fredonia on Friday, Dec. 5, and Buffalo State on Saturday, Dec. 6. The team returns in the new year to host the Comfort Inn Complex Winter Classic, where Amherst and Suffolk open the tournament at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 2, followed by Plattsburgh taking on Wesleyan at 7 p.m. Consolation and championship games are scheduled for Sunday, Jan. 3, at 3:30 p.m. and 7 p.m., respectively. The Cardinals then travel to Norwich for their final nonconference game Tuesday, Jan. 6, before resuming SUNYAC play on the road against Skidmore, which joins the conference in 2025-26, on Saturday, Jan. 10. Plattsburgh State opens a four-game homestand by hosting Canton on Friday, Jan. 16, and Potsdam on Saturday, Jan. 17, both at 7 p.m. The following weekend, the Cardinals welcome Hobart and Oswego State on Friday, Jan. 23, and Saturday, Jan. 24. The team closes January with road games at Cortland on Friday, Jan. 30, and Morrisville on Saturday, Jan. 31. The Cardinals begin February with back-to-back home games against Buffalo State on Friday, Feb. 6, at 7 p.m., and Fredonia on Saturday, Feb. 7, at 4 p.m. Skidmore concludes the home schedule Friday, Feb. 13, while Plattsburgh State finishes the regular season on the road against Potsdam on Friday, Feb. 20, and Canton on Saturday, Feb. 21. The top-six teams in the final conference standings will qualify for the SUNYAC tournament. The first round is set for Feb. 25, the semifinals Feb. 28, and the championship game March 7. The top-two seeds earn byes to the semifinals, while seeds three through six compete in the first round. Season-ticket renewals begin Monday, Aug. 18, with sales to new season-ticket holders starting Tuesday, Sept. 4.
