Bill McKibben speaks at Tannery Talks event

NORTH CREEK | Look to the sun – it's the star that fuels our world. That's the hopeful advice environmentalist Bill McKibben will offer on July 20 when he speaks at Tannery Pond Center's latest Tannery Talks event. It's also the prime message of his latest book, "Here Comes the Sun: A Last Chance for the Climate and a Fresh Chance for Civilization," due to be released on Aug. 19. McKibben, the author of more than 20 books and a long-time homeowner in the local Garnet Lake community, is a contributing writer for The New Yorker and an extensive history of leadership of environmental protection efforts. He founded the first global grassroots climate campaign in 2008, .350.org. In recent years, he founded the group Third Act, which organizes people over the age of 60 to work on climate and racial justice issues. McKibben's talk will take place at 2 p.m. in Tannery Pond's auditorium. Admission is free, with a suggested donation of $10 at the door. No reservation is required. Following his presentation, questions from the floor will be encouraged. His new book documents the huge spike in inexpensive power reaped from sun and wind sources in recent years – growing faster than any energy source in history – and their potential as a path out of the world's energy and climate crises. McKibben will also share plans for Sun Day, on Sept. 21, which calls on supporters of clean energy to show up at sites around the country to celebrate the power of renewable energy and encourage laws supporting renewables of every kind.McKibben's talk is the second in the series of Tannery Talks the community center in Johnsburg is offering this year. The third, on Sept. 14, part of the Town of Johnsburg's History Weekend, will feature author Glenn Pearsall speaking about "The American Revolution: What they didn't teach us in high school."
