Odinn captures perfect winds for first place win in 48th Mayor's Cup Regatta

PLATTSBURGH | Lake Champlain delivered near-perfect seas and sun for the 48th Mayor's Cup challenge on Saturday, combining wind and waves that brought out the best in sailors from across the northeast and Canada. "Conditions were ideal for sailing and the races were very competitive," expressed Joanne Dahlen, who presented race results on behalf of the Sunrise Rotary Club Mayor's Cup Committee. "Congratulations to the 2025 Mayor's Cup Winner (Spinnaker Division) Odinn, skippered by Ed and John Trombley, of Plattsburgh; Rotary Cup Winner (Jib & Main Division) Endo-X, skippered by Miro Balcar of Montreal, Que.; and Multihull Division Winner, Shoshin, skippered by Tim McKegney, of West Lebanon, NH. "Unfortunately, the Valcour Race was cancelled this morning because of high wind conditions on Lake Champlain that persisted throughout the day," Dahlen said on Sunday. Taking second and third in the Spinnaker Division, A-Fleet, were Pearl, captained by Jack Wallace of South Burlington and the Lisa J, skippered by Tris Coffrin of Shelburne. Fleet B class spinnaker racing was led by Lift Ticket, captained by Sam Pratt of Richmond, Vermont. The Fleet C class spinnaker winner was Indominatus, skippered by Brad Dumas of Plattsburgh. Competition was similarly fierce in Jib & Main racing with Canadian boats claiming both second and third place. O'de Vent with Daniel Hancock, of St Jean, Que., at the helm and the Anjin San skippered by Richard Leboef of Dorval. Full Fraes took first in Fleet B Jib & Main racing, helmed by Larry Hinkey of Glens Falls. Mayor's Cup Regatta Multihull racing had a strong field for competition. Behind winner McKegney by just minutes were Blade Runner, skippered by Devin Van Zandt, of Saratoga Springs, and Hull Razor, captained by Dwight Williams, of Broadalbin. RACE FESTIVITIES Festivities at City Marina and City Beach brought out Mayor's Cup fun for sailing fans and landlubbers of all ages. "There was tons of fun to go around with the kayak Paddle Party, the Pirates & Parrots Poker Run, the 5k, the Kid's Fun Run, the Corn Hole Tournament and a 9-hole mini-putt course set up at the marina where there was live music," Dahlen said. Sand Castle competition and music at City Beach welcomed adventurers on a hot day, even though swimming was off limits due to blue-green algae bloom. The city closed the beach July 10 after testing, awaiting improved results that have to stand in succession over several days. To beat the heat, City of Plattsburgh Fire Department brought one of their fire trucks and sprayed water from the tanker and fire hoses, creating immense, one-of-a-kind sprinkler fun near the beach parking lot. The morning's Mayor's Cup 5k Run/Walk fielded a great crowd, championed with applause and cheers as they rounded the finish near the City Beach entrance. The NAMI Champlain Valley sand castle competition was focused on "Hope Grows Here," with a message of support through kindness and self-care. Local organizations turned out to share outreach and good vibes, including the North Country Center for Independence with a Snap and Smile Pavilion photo booth; Battle of Plattsburgh committee members presented in full rooster regalia, heralding Rooster Crowing competition coming up in September along with four days of BOP events. The Clinton County Human Rights Commission was on hand, along with information about Rotary Club activities. Elizabeth Pearl from Pearl Physical Therapy Lifestyle Medicine led a beachfront yoga session with the wind and sun. 95 Triple X Live Beach Broadcast livened a sultry summer day. And the Town of Plattsburgh paddle party came in for the chill with flamingo floats and canoes festooned with palm trees. Proceeds from Mayor's Cup activities support many programs through Sunrise Rotary giving. "The Mayor's Cup Regatta & Festival, Sunrise Rotary's largest fundraiser and largest community event, also fuels the club's passion for protecting our natural resources and making them more accessible to the community," Dahlen said. "Proceeds from the sales of the Mayor's Cup t-shirts and hats, and donations from sponsors, are critical to Sunrise Rotary's continued efforts to build and support projects such as the Pavilion at Wilcox Dock, the Gazebo at the Samuel D. Champlain Park, the Max Moore Tree House at the Saranac River Trail trailhead and providing wheelchair accessibility to areas such as the Plattsburgh City Beach, Camp Tapawingo and the LaPierre Lane Park." Sailing Mayor's Cup remains a prestige point for Plattsburgh and its undulant Lake Champlain shoreline. In positioning competition, Mayor's Cup organizers admit: "Racers face a 'no guts, no glory' competition known since 1978 for its spirited fun and, sometimes, high-seas adventure. When skippers, who compete around the world, claim Lake Champlain as 'sailing at its best,' we know our waterfront treasure is no fool's gold!"
